Deal reached for stopping spike in milk prices

(AP) ? The top leaders in both parties on the House and Senate Agriculture committees have agreed to a one-year extension of the 2008 farm bill that expired in October, a move that could head off a possible doubling of milk prices next month.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow indicated that the House could vote on the extension as early as Sunday evening, though House leaders have not yet agreed to put it on the floor. In addition to the one-year extension that has the backing of the committees, the House GOP is also considering two other extension bills ? a one-month extension and an even smaller bill that would simply extend dairy policy that expires Jan. 1.

Expiration of those dairy programs could mean higher prices at the grocery store within a few weeks. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Americans face the prospect of paying $7 for a gallon of milk if the current dairy program lapsed and the government returned to a 1948 formula for calculating milk price supports.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday afternoon that Republican leaders had not decided how they would proceed on the farm extension. Boehner has pushed back on passage of a new five-year farm bill for months, saying there were not enough votes to bring it to the House floor after the House Agriculture Committee approved it in July. The Senate passed its version of a farm bill in June.

The prospect of the higher milk prices has motivated some action. The bipartisan extension also includes disaster assistance to farmers affected by a lingering drought this year, along with extensions to other farm programs that expired in October.

Instead of just extending current dairy policy, the extension bill includes an overhaul of dairy programs that was in both the Senate and House committee bills. The new dairy programs include a new, voluntary insurance program for dairy producers. Those who choose that new program would also have to participate in a market stabilization program that could dictate production cuts when oversupply drives down prices ? an idea that hasn't gone over well with Boehner.

In July, he called the current dairy program "Soviet-style" and said the new program would make it even worse. Large food companies that process and use dairy products have backed Boehner, saying the program could limit milk supplies and increase their costs.

Stabenow blamed Boehner for getting to the point where an extension is the only option. "The lack of action by the House Republican leadership has put us in a situation where we risk serious damage to our economy unless we pass a temporary extension," she said.

One of the reasons Boehner has balked at bringing up a farm bill is disagreement in his caucus over how much money should be cut from food stamps, which make up roughly 80 percent of the half-trillion-dollar bill's cost over five years. House Agriculture Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., has unsuccessfully pushed his leadership for months to move on the legislation despite the disagreement over food aid.

On Sunday, Lucas said he hoped the extension would pass both chambers quickly as GOP leadership mulled their options.

"It is not perfect, no compromise ever is, but it is my sincere hope that it will pass the House and Senate and be signed by the president by January 1," he said.

Sudan's Bashir dances at first rally since surgery

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir danced, waved his walking stick and delivered a defiant speech on Thursday at his first rally since undergoing surgery in Saudi Arabia and withstanding what officials called an attempted coup.

Diplomats and Sudanese bloggers have speculated about the 68-year-old veteran leader's health after he appeared less frequently in public in recent months.

He did not attend an economic conference in Khartoum on November 27, the kind of event he has used in the past to attack a U.S. trade embargo on the country.

On Thursday, Bashir opened a new oilfield in western Sudan which the government hopes will mitigate the loss of crucial oil reserves since South Sudan seceded last year.

"To the enemies of Sudan who said that Sudan would collapse after the loss of oil to the South, we say our livelihood does not come from America or Israel or Europe but from God," he told thousands of cheering people gathered at the Hadida oilfield in the Darfur region.

Over his 23 years in power, Bashir has weathered armed rebellions, soaring inflation, years of U.S. trade sanctions, an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court and student protests as well as the secession of the south last year.

He has faced popular discontent over an economic crisis and divisions within his ruling circle. The government arrested former spy chief Salah Gosh and twelve others last month, accusing them of trying to stage a coup.

He had an operation on his vocal cords in Qatar in August and went to Saudi Arabia in November for what officials described as minor surgery.

The televised speech on Thursday lasted less than ten minutes, shorter than previous ones, but Bashir also performed his trademark celebratory dance for the first time in several months.

He did not refer directly to the alleged coup attempt.

"Let's leave the conflicts and problems because conflicts only make our enemies stronger... Let's sit down together and solve all problems," said Bashir.

What's Hot and Hotter ? Womens Fashion Clothes for the Coldest ...

The winter season is here and womens fashions have delivered a range of styles to suit most tastes. Unlike previous season, in which plus size women in particular have been penalised by Dame Fashion for not having certain tastes or not looking good in certain cuts, the AW 2012 season has put together what is almost a hit parade of previous fashion favourites from nearly a century?s worth of styles, cuts and colours.

The womens fashion clothes on offer for the AW 2012 season range from highly coloured late 20th Century prints to delicate, sombre mid-century dresses and from high Victoriana to understated 21st Century cool. From peplum to chiffon, from floaty to figure hugging, there?s a combination for every lady as the party season gets under way again.

Plus sized fashions this year combine a number of looks and feels ? including the two tone look popularised by the world?s favourite plus size beauty, Christina Hendricks. Ever since being voted World?s Sexiest Woman in a poll of the readers of an influential and well-known male interest magazine, Christina has reminded us all why the bountifully proportioned girl is the one we all love. This year?s fashions pay homage to some of her outfits in hit TV show ?Mad Men? ? as well as to the years and styles that have formed some of our most enduring impressions of retro cool.

This year?s womens fashion clothes include 50s style dresses, Edwardian style dresses and even a return to the loudness of the 80s and 90s with some delicious outfits that remind us of the times without repeating their fashion crimes (so, no massive shoulder pads, for example!). The modern retro look does what retro does best ? taking the spirit of an era without actually replicating the materials and cuts it used to be famous for.

For the plus sized lady, the most complementary fashions are the 50s style dresses, modern floating dresses (which also have a late Victorian Gothic look to them) and of course, the classic jeans and jacket look ? which can be stunning on a lady with generous hips and chest measurements.

As a plus sized lady, you will already know what styles suit you the best. Make the most of our peplum dress for the hourglass figure featured with a heavier waist ? perfect for most occasions from parties to work. Or balance a top heavy figure with a jacket and trousers. Wearing the cut of the trousers loose from midthigh down can reinstate balance to the silhouette of a lady whose upper deck is notably bigger than the rest of her.

The clothes you choose need to express your personality as well as your fashion sense. That?s why the AW 2012 selection is so exciting. For the first time in a long time, you?re able to really combine your personal style with the styles available to you on the high street and from the internet sites you use. AW 2012 womens fashion clothes represent the widest selection of tastes and styles seen on the street in a long time.

But today we got word of a new TV show also dubbed 'Silicon Valley'

New turmoil hits Egypt's tourism

CAIRO (AP) ? At Egypt's Pyramids, the desperation of vendors to sell can be a little frightening for some tourists.

Young men descend on any car with foreigners in it blocks before it reaches the more than 4,500 year-old Wonder of the World. They bang on car doors and hoods, some waving the sticks and whips they use for driving camels, demanding the tourists come to their shop or ride their camel or just give money.

In the southern city of Aswan, tour operator Ashraf Ibrahim was recently taking a group to a historic mosque when a mob of angry horse carriage drivers trapped them inside, trying to force them to take rides. The drivers told Ibrahim to steer business their way in the future or else they'd burn his tourist buses, he said.

Egypt's touts have always been aggressive ? but they're more desperate than ever after nearly two years of devastation in the tourism industry, a pillar of the economy.

December, traditionally the start of Egypt's peak season, has brought new pain. Many foreigners stayed away because of the televised scenes of protests and clashes on the streets of Cairo in the battle over a controversial constitution.

Arrivals this month were down 40 percent from November, according to airport officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Tourism workers have little hope that things will get better now that the constitution came into effect this week after a nationwide referendum. The power struggle between Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and the opposition threatens to erupt at any time into more unrest in the streets.

More long term, many in the industry worry ruling Islamists will start making changes like banning alcohol or swimsuits on beaches that they fear will drive tourists away.

"Nobody can plan anything because one day you find that everything might be OK and another that everything is lost. You can't even take a right decision or plan for the next month," said Magda Fawzi, head of Sabena Management.

She's thinking of shutting down her company, which runs two hotels in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh and four luxury cruise boats on the Nile between the ancient cities of Luxor and Aswan. In one hotel, only 10 of 300 rooms are booked, and only one of her ships is operating, she said. She has already downsized from 850 employees before the revolution to 500.

"I don't think there will be any stability with this kind of constitution. People will not accept it," she said.

Tourism, one of Egypt's biggest foreign currency earners, was gutted by the turmoil of last year's 18-day uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Scared off by the upheaval, the number of tourists fell to 9.8 million in 2011 from 14.7 million the year before, and revenues plunged 30 percent to $8.8 billion.

This year, the industry struggled back. By the end of September, 8.1 million tourists had come, injecting $10 billion into the economy. The number for the full year is likely to surpass 2011 but is still considerably down from 2010.

For the public, it has meant a drying up of income, given that tourism provided direct or indirect employment to one in eight Egyptians in 2010, according to government figures.

Poverty swelled at the country's fastest rate in Luxor province, highly dependent on visitors to its monumental temples and the tombs of King Tutankamun and other pharaohs. In 2011, 39 percent of its population lived on less than $1 a day, compared to 18 percent in 2009, according to government figures.

For the government, the fall in tourism and foreign investment since the revolution has worsened a debt crisis and forced talks with the International Monetary Fund over a $4.8 billion loan.

Morsi has promised to expand tourism, but hotel owners and tour operators say he has yet to make clear any plans.

Their biggest fear is new violence causing shocks like December's. Ibrahim, of the Eagle Travels tourism company, said that because of this month's protests, two German operators he works with cancelled tours. They weren't even heading to Cairo, but to the Red Sea, Luxor and Aswan, far from the unrest.

But some in the industry fear that, with the constitution's provisions strengthening implementation of Shariah, Islamists will ban alcohol or restrict dress on Egypt's beaches, which rival antiquities sites as draws for tourism. Officials from the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, are vague about any plans.

Ultraconservative Salafis, who are key allies of Morsi, have been more direct.

Nader Bakkar, spokesman for the Salafi Nour Party, told a conference of tour guides in Aswan earlier this month that tourists should not be allowed to buy alcohol but could bring it with them and drink it in their rooms. Tourists should also be encouraged to wear conservative dress, he said.

"We welcome all tourists but we tell them ... there are traditions and beliefs in the country, so respect them," he said. "Most tourists will have no problem if you tell them" to bring their own alcohol.

One Salafi sheik earlier this year said the Pyramids and Sphinx should be demolished as anti-Islamic ? like Afghanistan's then-Taliban rulers destroyed monumental Buddha statues in 2001. Bakkar dismissed the comments as the opinion of one cleric.

But tour guide Gladys Haddad sees the Salafis' attitude as a threat, saying the constitution should have said more to protect Egypt's pharaonic heritage. "We are talking about a civilization that they do not acknowledge. They see it as idolatrous."

"Why would a tourist come to a resort if he can't drink?" said Fawzi, of Sabena Management. "People are coming for tours and monuments, and to relax on the boats. If they feel that restriction, why should they come?"

Nahla Mofied of Escapade Travels said the Islamists might restrict what tourists can "wear and do" but, given its importance to the economy, "they may not destroy tourism fully."

Complicating attempts to draw tourists back is the lawlessness gripping Egypt the past two years. With police supervision low, tourist touts increasingly assault guides and even tourists to demand business. In September, 150 tour guides held a protest against attacks by vendors.

"We have struggled with this problem since before the revolution, but now the situation is completely out of control," Ibrahim said.

At the Giza Pyramids, police seem indifferent to the touts. Camel-riding police even join in, pushing tourists to take rides.

Gomaa al-Gabri, an antiquities employee, was infuriated at the sight, shouting, "You sons of dogs" and a slew of other insults at a policeman trying to get money off a tourist.

"They're trying to take away my income," said the father of 11. "In Mubarak's time we wouldn't dare talk to them like this. Now I can hit him with a shoe on his head and he can't speak."

For some tourists at the Pyramids, the chaos is part of the experience.

"I just love it," British tourist Brian Wilson said. "You can't blame people wanting to make money."

Egypt's central bank governor says he has not resigned

CAIRO (Reuters) - The governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, Farouk El-Okdah, said on Sunday he had not resigned from his post, denying a report aired on state television the previous day which said he had stepped down.

Egypt's cabinet had already denied the report the previous day .

"I did not resign," El-Okdah told reporters at the cabinet headquarters on Sunday after a meeting with a ministerial committee for economic policies.

There has been regular speculation in the media that he wanted to leave his post, and state TV had reported that he had resigned and that his former deputy, Hisham Ramez, had been appointed to replace him.

El-Okdah helped steer the central bank during last year's uprising which ousted former President Hosni Mubarak and is credited with helping keep the Egyptian currency relatively stable despite the political turmoil.

LG's latest smart TV Magic Remote can control other devices, understand natural language

We've seen several iterations of LG's Magic remote since it was first introduced in 2010 with gesture control, as it added a click wheel and a mic for voice control (QWERTY for the Google TV), and LG has announced it's returning with a new model at CES in a few days. The new Magic remote keeps all of those features and adds on with universal remote capabilities that let it control other hardware in your home theater, and improved software with Natural Language support. That means you can just say the name of a program or a channel, and see it automatically pop up on the screen. The design of the hardware itself has also been tweaked, with repositioned buttons and, on the premium version that ships with higher end TVs, a smaller model with backlit keys. We'll surely give it another hand waving, command shouting demo once we're in Las Vegas, until then you can just check out another pic and a press release after the break.

Plenty of playoff intrigue in NFL Week 16

nfl
The San Francisco 49ers are now favoured to win the Super Bowl at 7-2 odds. (Reuters)

Report an error

TORONTO?-?

With the merciful elimination of the New York Jets ? in a game that deserves to have the lowest Monday Night Football ratings in history ? there are now 19 teams mathematically alive for the NFL playoffs.

And only 32 games left to sort it out.

Some of those teams have to defy the laws of probability ? like New Orleans, which has odds of 5,000-1 to win the Super Bowl; and St. Louis and Miami at 2,000-1 each.

Others have very little to play for over the final two weeks of the regular season and some have work to do to get in, with divisional titles still up for grabs as well as the wild-card spots and overall seedings.

Of the teams that are worth discussing, though, there is much intrigue to be played out during Week 16, which begins with a Saturday nighter between Detroit and Atlanta. (Appropriately, there will be no Monday nighter this week as it falls on Christmas Eve.)

Much is known, much left to be decided. Four AFC teams have earned playoff spots with three of those clinching their divisions. The NFC has just two division titles awarded and a real mess in the conference?s most high-profile group.

Here?s an attempt at sorting some of what can be settled over the weekend:

CLINCH BEFORE CHRISTMAS

First up on our pre-playoff preview are the teams that can clinch something in their next game without help. There are several teams that can achieve guarantees with assistance elsewhere, but each of the following can be settled on the field Saturday and Sunday.

  • The struggling Baltimore Ravens can clinch the AFC North with a win over the inconsistent New York Giants.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals can earn a playoff spot (at least a wild-card) with a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  • The Indianapolis Colts can complete their remarkable turnaround season with a guaranteed a wild-card berth by winning over the lowly Kansas City Chiefs.
  • An Atlanta Falcons win over Detroit essentially clinches them home-field throughout the NFL playoffs.
  • The showdown in Seattle on Sunday night will result in an NFC West title for the San Francisco 49ers if they hand the Seahawks their first home loss of the season. If the Seahawks win, they clinch a playoff spot.

LEAST OF THE EAST

It?s not necessarily the most high-quality race still going, but with three 8-6 teams headed in various directions, the NFC East may well have the most intrigue heading into the penultimate week of the schedule.

First things first: That would be the Redskins, who own the tiebreaks and can retain it all if they win out vs. the Eagles and Cowboys.

The defending Super Bowl champion Giants have Baltimore then the Eagles as their remaining games and winning both would get them in the playoffs, though not necessarily the division title because they lose tiebreakers to both the Cowboys and Redskins.

After wins against the Bengals and the Steelers, the Cowboys have set themselves up for a shot at sneaking in, but it won?t be easy. The ?Boys start with a home date vs. New Orleans then end the season in Washington in what could be a division-deciding contest. Chances are strong they will need to go 2-0 to get in.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE

How costly was that overtime loss (set up by a Ben Roethlisberger interception) in Dallas for the Steelers? A loss to visiting Cincinnati on Sunday eliminates the Steelers. And even if they survive that, they have the Ravens in the season finale. Welcome to the wacky AFC North.

The Ravens could clinch the division with a win this weekend, but against the New York Giants that isn?t a gimme, especially given the poor current form of Baltimore.

And as unlikely as it seems, the third team in the race, the Bengals, have the most control of their destiny because they play each of their division rivals in their two remaining contests.

BY THE BYE

The Patriots? loss to the 49ers this past Sunday night may have been costly in their pursuit of a first-round bye in the AFC, not to mention a home-field advantage early on.

The Texans seem destined to grab the conference?s No. 1

seed ? and a win over the Vikings this weekend would secure it ? while Denver claims the other bye and

No. 2 seed if they win out. With games against Cleveland and Kansas City, the Broncos will be expected to do just that.

Over in the NFC, the Falcons are in control and can wrap up the No. 1 seed with a win over the Giants this weekend. The No. 2 seed still has some uncertainty with the 10-4 Packers and the 10-3-1 49ers the leading contenders.

NINERS LOOK SUPER

Picking a winner each week in this typically unpredictable NFL season is a moving target. So too is picking a Super Bowl favourite, with no clear standout at this point.

Action this past weekend prompted Las Vegas bookies to shuffle the deck on their odds to take it all. Most notably, San Francisco?s mild upset on the road in New England has the 49ers as the slight favourites, according to odds compiled by Vegasinsider.com

Here?s a look at the top six contenders, the only teams in single digits:

San Francisco 49ers, 7-2

Huge game vs. Seattle this weekend.

Denver Broncos, 4-1

Most consistent in the AFC as they roll toward playoffs.

New England Patriots, 9-2

With that offence, should recover from 49ers speed bump.

Houston Texans, 5-1

Likely to enter post-season as top seed in the NFC.

Atlanta Falcons, 6-1

AFC sleeper, largely because of past playoff failures.

Green Bay Packers, 6-1

A year ago they were faves. Riding a nice streak now.

(AP) ? They've been arguing about a name for 106 years. A small brewer in the Czech Republic and the world's biggest beer maker have been suing each other over the right to put the word Budweiser on their bottles in what has become a David versus Goliath corporate saga.

A deal, it seems, will have to wait a bit longer because settlement talks between state-owned Budejovicky Budvar and Anheuser-Busch, a U.S. company now part of AB InBev, have collapsed, according to Budvar's director general, Jiri Bocek.

The dispute is over exclusive rights ? when only one of the companies is allowed to use the Budweiser name in any given country. As a larger company, AB InBev is particularly keen to expand its exports and market its beers under the Budweiser brand. But Budvar says that giving up its exclusive rights to the name would threaten to wipe out its own brand from the market.

Budvar recently rejected a proposal for a global settlement by AB InBev, which in turn refused a counteroffer. Bocek said negotiations on these proposals, details of which he could not provide, were over.

"Any new deal proposed by Anheuser-Busch wouldn't be working for us," he told The Associated Press in a rare interview with a major foreign news organization. AB InBev declined to comment on the details of the talks.

The brewers last agreed on a global settlement in 1939 in a pact that gave Anheuser-Busch sole rights to the name Budweiser in all American territories north of Panama. But the peace did not last long as the two companies expanded exports to new markets.

Though AB InBev is far larger than Budvar ? it produces 270 times more beer ? the Czech company has been punching above its weight in the legal arena. It won 88 of 124 disputes between 2000 and 2011 and holds exclusive rights in 68 countries, mostly in Europe, preventing AB Inbev from entering some key markets such as Germany with the Budweiser brand.

When the companies do not have exclusive rights to the Budweiser brand in a country, they resort to using slightly altered names. AB Inbev sells its Budweiser as Bud in many European countries. Budvar sells its lager as Czechvar in the U.S.

One of the issues, Bocek said, is that AB Inbev is not satisfied with sharing the brand name.

"Their goal is to gain exclusivity for their Budweiser all around the world," said Bocek, who as head of Budvar for the past 21 years has raised the heat on the larger rival.

Co-existence is possible, however. In fact, the two companies already share the Budweiser name in one country, Britain.

Both brewers were granted the right to use the name in 2000 after a British court ruled that drinkers were aware of the difference between the two beers. An appeals court this summer rejected AB InBev's request to have Budvar's trademark declared invalid.

AB InBev is not happy with the situation.

"Our concern is that coexistence on the U.K. market with the Budweiser brand will lead to consumer confusion," said Karen Couck, the spokeswoman for AB Inbev. "We want to make sure that when our customers order a Budweiser that they receive the clean, crisp taste of the global brand we have created."

But most beer drinkers would easily spot the difference, says Iain Loe, former research manager for Britain's Campaign for Real Ale, a consumer rights organization.

Budvar has "a full bodied taste" while "AB's Budweiser has little taste, or in the words of AB InBev, a clean taste," said Loe. "Customers know which beer is which."

The companies' claims to the Budweiser name are built on two main arguments ? geography and history.

Budejovicky Budvar was founded in 1895 in the southern city of Ceske Budejovice ? called Budweis at the time by the German-speaking people who formed about 40 percent of the area's population. Beer has been brewed here since 1265 and has been known for centuries as Budweiser.

Budvar argues that only beer that is brewed in this corner of the Czech Republic can be called Budweiser.

The founders of Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis used the name for their product because it was so well-known. The brewer, founded in 1852, began producing Budweiser, America's first national beer brand, in 1876 ? 19 years before Budvar was founded.

The two companies have been in a legal battle since 1906. Today, the dispute is being waged through 61 suits in 11 countries.

Budvar has some leverage in the dispute in that AB InBev may be missing out on a larger bulk of sales until a settlement is found, since its operations are so much bigger. It brewed 349.8 million hectoliters last year compared with Budvar's 1.32 million hectoliters. That's the equivalent of 73.9 billion pints against 279 million pints.

"Budvar blocks the markets where AB InBev, due to its trading power, marketing and distribution potential, would likely gain significantly more," said Karel Potmesil an analyst at stock brokerage Cyrrus AS. "The dispute limits the development of the brands that the company considers the most valuable in the industry."

If the issue is frustrating AB InBev, the company is not showing it.

"The dispute has not hindered our global expansion," said Couck, the spokeswoman.

She cited figures showing AB InBev's global sales were up 3.1 percent in 2011 and 6.2 percent in the first nine months of 2012. The U.S. Budweiser is brewed in more than 15 countries and sold in more than 80 others. Its key markets are the United States, China, Canada and Britain.

Budvar holds rights for Germany and other European markets as well as 11 Asian countries, including Japan, Korea, China and Vietnam.

"It's certainly quite unpleasant for AB InBev that it cannot sell the well-known brand it has developed on some key markets, especially in Germany, which is the most important market for Budvar," said Potmesil.

Budvar is also being hurt by the legal standoff: because of the legal issues, it takes seven to 10 years for the company to enter a new market.

But Potmesil noted Budvar does not gain much by entering new markets. It has a smaller marketing budget and its beer typically costs more, which hurts sales in lower-income countries like China.

In the end, the dispute mainly provides Budvar with protection against competition from AB InBev. Against such a large rival, Bocek said, it is essential that Budvar use all the legal leverage it can. "We have a right to exist," he said.

Infosys may trim forecast again as U.S. clients cut back

BANGALORE (Reuters) - Infosys, India's No. 2 software services provider, may cut its revenue forecast next month as U.S. business clients defer spending and balk at signing big deals.

The outsourcing icon, which has missed its own revenue guidance in three of the past four quarters, has struggled as its big customers cut costs, and analysts have criticized management for sticking with a rigid pricing policy when competitors have offered more flexible plans.

Infosys executives have sounded downbeat in recent interviews and in meetings with analysts, citing client troubles ranging from Hurricane Sandy-related shutdowns to worries about the U.S. "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts.

"From what they've been saying in various conversations, it's not unlikely that they will cut guidance," said Ambit Capital analyst Ankur Rudra, who has maintained a "sell" rating on Infosys shares since January 2011.

An Infosys spokeswoman declined to comment, noting that the company is in a mandatory quiet period ahead of its earnings results due in January.

With about 60 percent of its business in the United States, Infosys is particularly vulnerable to swings in U.S. corporate sentiment and has been hit hard by spending deferrals.

Diviya Nagarajan, an analyst at UBS, wrote in a December 6 note to clients that the company's growth forecast for the fiscal year ending in March could be under threat because of cutbacks on large projects and delays in closing deals.

UBS organized an investor meeting on December 6, featuring Infosys Chief Executive Officer S.D. Shibulal.

Longer-than-expected client shutdowns due to Hurricane Sandy, especially in the manufacturing sector, were also hurting Infosys, wrote Nagarajan in her report.

Infosys's guidance of 5 percent dollar revenue growth for the current fiscal year compares with an estimate of 11 percent for the sector by the National Association of Software and Services Companies, or NASSCOM.

Infosys, for years an investor favorite for exceeding its targets, stopped providing quarterly guidance in July after a string of disappointing results. It now provides only an annual revenue forecast.

It is expected to update its outlook for the fiscal year ending in March when it reports quarterly results on January 11. A forecast cut would be the second this fiscal year. In July, Infosys halved its dollar revenue growth estimate from as much as 10 percent - forecast in April - to 5 percent.

LEANING OVER THE CLIFF

Long the sector bellwether, Infosys is in the midst of a strategy shift that it calls "Infosys 3.0" as it tries to diversify away from businesses that have become commoditized. It is focusing on developing its own software and building technological expertise.

At the same time, industry insiders say, it is quietly becoming more flexible on its premium pricing, given fierce competition.

"Things have become challenging, because in the U.S., which is the largest market for all of us, the fiscal cliff is still not resolved, they are still talking about it, there is a lot of uncertainty, so all the corporates are sitting tight on their spending," V. Balakrishnan, who was previously chief financial officer and now heads three Infosys units, told reporters on December 12.

The company is also heavily exposed to discretionary spending in the financial sector. While such business is lucrative during good times, it is vulnerable when the industry is retrenching.

"Previously, the banks would come and talk to us, you know. Now, discretionary projects, they can pull the plug with 48 hours notice," Infosys CFO Rajiv Bansal told Reuters on December 8.

UNDERPERFORMER

Infosys shares are down almost 18 percent this year, compared with a 7 percent gain for larger rival Tata Consultancy Services and a 3.1 percent fall for the sector index. That compares with a 25 percent gain for the broader market.

Some investors are betting the stock will continue to fall. Nearly three-quarters of Infosys American depositary receipts that can be borrowed are out on loan, compared with an average of about 8.7 percent for all ADRs, according to data from Markit Securities Finance.

In the nine months ended September, Infosys's operating profit dropped about five percentage points as a proportion of revenue, from 31.2 percent for the quarter ended December 2011 to 26.3 percent, according to data on the company's website.

Cowen and Co analysts downgraded Infosys to "neutral" from "outperform" on December 3, expecting it to have a "protracted revenue growth recovery."

In a Cowen survey of IT buyers, Infosys scored poorly, behind competitors such as Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp, on both new client additions and project workload, which the analysts define as spending intentions from existing and new clients.

U.S. based Cognizant expects to end the year to December with 20 percent revenue growth.

Infosys's difficulties stand in contrast with commentary from larger rival TCS, which is known to be more flexible on pricing and has maintained that it will beat NASSCOM's estimate this year and that next year will be even better.

Cognizant and India's HCL Technologies have also been winning market share by being more flexible on pricing, which puts more pressure on Infosys at a time when customers are hesitant to add new spending.

"While the net new scope of work hasn't been increasing greatly, a large number of contracts of significant value are coming back to the market as renewals or recompetes," said Siddharth Pai, partner at Information Services Group, which advises global clients on outsourcing strategies.

"Our data suggests that incumbents win these contracts the majority of the time, but each renewal constitutes an opportunity for a rival to displace the incumbent," he said.

30 Days to a Better Step Family ? Day 23 | Diane W. Bailey

Long before I was a stepmother, I was the neighborhood mom.? There have always been children in and around my home.? Sometimes it got a little crazy.

_MG_8181

One day, the boys were outside jumping out of the two story oak tree in our front yard. Going out, I cautioned them about the dangers of jumping out of trees that tall; and I asked them ?to please stop.? The next thing I know, my son?s mattress is in the yard and they are landing on it!? The boys claimed that was how the firemen did it.

?

What do you say?? I mean, I have never found a rulebook that tells you the correct response to THAT situation.? So, what did I do?? I had mercy on their creative and shortsighted souls.? I gave them 20 more minutes of supervised jumping off of lower branches. Then, I gave them the vacuum cleaner so that they could vacuum the mattress before retuning it to the bed.

?

One particular Saturday morning, I could hear someone going through the refrigerator and, thinking it was my daughter, (I was a single mom at this point) I walked into the kitchen in my pajamas.? There, bent over looking in the refrig, is this teenage boy.

?

?Hey, Chad, (not his real name) ummm, what cha doin??

?

?Hey Ms. Diane, I was hungry and there is nothing to eat at our house.?

?

Retuning to my room, I dressed, and came out to cook some breakfast for Chad and my daughter, who was now awake.? I?m guessing that I had left the backdoor unlocked; and, that was how he came in; but, I never asked.

?

As we ate, Chad casually mentioned that his mom?s boyfriend had spent the night; and, he didn?t like being there when there was spend-the-night company.? He came to our home because there was food, and he stayed because someone was listening.

?

It would have been very easy and, unfortunately, very natural for me to confront Chad on coming in the way he did that morning.?? However, by the Grace of God, I held my tongue and was able to listen to that young man who was in desperate need of a mother?s listening ear.? I could not fix his problems, but I could listen.

?

If nothing else, I tried to keep good food around the house for the kids; though, my daughter, who was the picky eater, would disagree.? Having food around makes children feel at home. Whether children, stepchildren, or neighborhood children, they will all agree that the house with the best food, and parents who will take the time to talk with them, is the house they will hang out in.

?

A house like this is a Mercy House, full of Grace.? Mercy withholds judgment and punishment.? It has rules but looks more for the relationship than the letter of the law.

?

Mercy, in Greek it is Eleeo.? The definition ?? a verb, an action word ?to be compassionate by word or deed, especially by divine grace, to have pity on.

?

_MG_8184_MG_8290_MG_8305

Our home, was a place of comfort ? not elegant, or beautifully decorated; but, it was a Mercy House.? I could tell you story after story about those years as a single mother as child after child came to our house for food, a safe place to shower, and sometimes even clothing.? There seemed to be so many broken homes in our neighborhood.? At this time, as a single mother, I had six neighborhood children calling me ?Mom.?

?

The lessons of compassion I learned back then, have been brought into this stepfamily.? Some worked; some needed adjusting, and, some I threw out.? The idea of a Mercy House, a safe place that my children, my stepchildren and their friends could come for food, clothing or a listening ear, never changed.

?

Let your home be a Mercy House for the children, stepchildren and their friends.? Remember, to some, you may be the only image of Christ that they ever see.? This is your mission field.

Relationships & Family - Grandparents Tackle The Long Distance ...

Grandparents Tackle The Long Distance Christmas 0 5

grandparents tackle Christmas long distance Design Pics/PhotoSpin

Grandparents whose children and grandchildren live far away are always envious of those grandparents with their families nearby. This is never more true than at Christmas.

It can take some time to learn the ropes of long distance Christmases.

What are the things that you can do to make everybody feel closer? How can you express your love for your grandkids in a way that they will feel it?

Fortunately there are more ways to accomplish this than ever before. Catalogue shopping will often deliver to outlets in your kids' area. Gifts bought online can be sent to their door.

You can send money without having to trust a check to the mail. Paypal, online bank transfers, or going into a bank branch and making a deposit in your child's account, will all get to their destination in much less time, some of them will even arrive the same day.

If you've waited too long to be able to send a Christmas card in regular mail, you can spend a bit more to have delivery happen faster. Or you can be high-tech and send an e-card.

Facebook can go a long way towards making it feel like the people you love are not so far away.

Posting pictures of family, Christmas meals and treats, trees and decorations can create a sense of immediacy and intimacy, as you share your traditions.

Being able to see photos of your grandkids, around the tree on Christmas morning, wearing the clothes or playing with the toys you sent, will warm your heart.

I haven't mastered Skype myself yet but I've heard it can be a great way to get together.

Of course, if all this new technology makes you nervous, there's nothing wrong with doing things old school. After all, grandparents have relied on such methods for ages.

Making a long distance phone call to family across the world has been a time-honored tradition in many households.

To send gifts in the mail you need to have yourself organized weeks ahead of time, unless you want their Christmas presents to become Valentine's Day gifts because they arrive so late.

But if you can have your letters and cards stamped and ready to mail early enough, you are golden.

Olive Goes The Crowdfunding Route With Its Open Platform, All-In-One Home Music Player

Olive_ONE_Gangnam_StyleOlive, a well established San Francisco-based audio company that makes high-end digital home audio systems, today took the somewhat unusual route of launching its latest product on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. The new Olive ONE, as it's called, is a departure for the company in more ways than that however: it's also a much more affordable option with a pre-order entry-level price of $399, and it features open architecture Olive hopes will become a vibrant development platform.

Too many antibiotics? Bacterial ecology that lives on humans has changed in last 100 years

Dec. 13, 2012 ? A University of Oklahoma-led study has demonstrated that ancient DNA can be used to understand ancient human microbiomes. The microbiomes from ancient people have broad reaching implications for understanding recent changes to human health, such as what good bacteria might have been lost as a result of our current abundant use of antibiotics and aseptic practices.

Cecil M. Lewis Jr., professor of anthropology in the OU College of Arts and Sciences and director of the OU Molecular Anthropology Laboratory, and Raul Tito, OU Research Associate, led the research study that analyzed microbiome data from ancient human fecal samples collected from three different archaeological sites in the Americas, each dating to over 1000 years ago. In addition, the team provided a new analysis of published data from two samples that reflect rare and extraordinary preservation: Otzi the Iceman and a soldier frozen for 93 years on a glacier.

"The results support the hypothesis that ancient human gut microbiomes are more similar to those of non-human primates and rural non-western communities than to those of people living a modern lifestyle in the United States," says Lewis. "From these data, the team concluded that the last 100 years has been a time of major change to the human gut microbiome in cosmopolitan areas."

"Dietary changes, as well as the widespread adoption of various aseptic and antibiotic practices have largely benefited modern humans, but many studies suggest there has been a cost, such as a recent increase in autoimmune related risks and other health states," states Lewis.

"We wish to reveal how this co-evolutionary relationship between humans and bacteria has changed, while providing the foundation for interventions to reconstruct what has been lost. One way to do this is to study remote communities and non-human primates. An alternative path is to look at ancient samples and see what they tell us," Lewis says.

"An argument can be made that remote traditional communities are not truly removed from modern human ecologies. They may receive milk or other food sources from the government, which could alter the microbial ecology of the community. Our evolutionary cousins, non-human primates are important to consider. However, the human-chimp common ancestor was over six million years ago, which is a lot of time for microbiomes to evolve distinct, human signatures."

Retrieving ancient human microbiome data is complementary to these studies. However, studying ancient microbiomes is not without problems. Assuming DNA preserves, there is also a problem with contamination and modification of ancient samples, both from the soil deposition, and from other sources, including the laboratory itself.

"In addition to laboratory controls in our study, we use an exciting new quantitative approach called source tracking developed by Dan Knights from Rob Knight's Laboratory at the University of Colorado in Boulder, which can estimate how much of the ancient microbiome data is consistent with the human gut, rather than other sources, such as soil," explains Lewis.

"We discovered that certain samples have excellent gut microbiome signatures, opening the door for deeper analyses of the ancient human gut, including a better understanding of the ancient humans themselves, such as learning more about their disease burdens, but also learning more about what has changed in our gut today."

You're furious at the plans to end free education at Cooper Union, an institution long applauded as one of the progressive beacons of 19th-century education. You're an art student and?join 10 other art students in a protest action that includes the occupation of your school's clocktower. Now, how do you symbolically choose to end your?occupation??Stage Leonardo's "Last Supper," of course.
