Find Unexpected New Uses for Your Crock Pot ... - Limerick Patch

Sure, you've used your Crock Pot for soups and stews. You probably own a cookbook, and you might even have sites like Crock Pot Girls bookmarked.

But have you made bread in a Crock Pot? Would it ever cross your mind to prepare veggies in one?

Pinterest, my new go-to corner of the Internet for recipes and kitchen inspiration, has more slow-cooker ideas than you could prepare in two lifetimes. Here are a few of my favorite you-can-make-that-in-a-Crock-Pot? recipes.

Lemon and garlic artichokes - I'm not sure why this spiky green veggie - a thistle flower, to be exact - gives people such pause. It strikes fear into the hearts of men. Most of you have had artichoke hearts on pizza or in dip, but I'd bet few of you have prepared them fresh. Why not? They're delicious and extremely healthy. This step-by-step recipe, with photos, should help take some of the fear out of preparing fresh artichokes.

Cheesecake - Prepare a perfect cheesecake in your slow cooker! The secret is a water bath, so you'll have to find a heat-resistant dish that fits into the Crock Pot. Prepare crust and cheesecake batter in the dish, then lower carefully into water bath in the Crock Pot. Bake two to three hours (but check after one). Chill for two hours.

Sourdough bread -Whether you use prepared dough, or make your own, you can have freshly baked bread, in under three hours, from the slow cooker! This is also a great way to bake without heating up the oven. (Hard to think about this now while it's 12 degrees outside, I know, but keep this in mind come July!)

Sausage and egg casserole - A complete breakfast! In a slow cooker! Prepared the night before! Does it get any better? Layer hashbrowns, cooked sausage, onions and cheese, then pour seasoned, whisked eggs over the whole thing. Cook on low for six to eight hours (overnight), and enjoy in the a.m.

Baked apples - All the goodness of baked apple pie, without the guilt of the crust (although, admittedly, the crust is my absolutely favorite part). Carve out the core of six apples and fill them with a mix of brown sugar, nuts, butter and cinnamon. Pour apple juice or apple cider into the Crock Pot, around the apples. Cook on high for two and a half to three hours, until soft. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt.

Friar accused of abuse in 2 states kills self

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? A Franciscan friar accused of sexually abusing students at Catholic high schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania killed himself at a western Pennsylvania monastery, police said Saturday.

Brother Stephen Baker, 62, was found dead of a self-inflicted knife wound at the St. Bernardine Monastery in Hollidaysburg on Saturday morning, Blair Township Police Chief Roger White said. He declined to say whether a note was found.

Baker was named in legal settlements last week involving 11 men who alleged that he sexually abused them at a Catholic high school in northeast Ohio three decades ago. The undisclosed financial settlements announced Jan. 16 involved his contact with students at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, Ohio from 1986-90.

The Youngstown diocese previously said it was unaware of the allegations until nearly 20 years after the alleged abuse.

"Let us continue to pray for all victims of abuse, for Brother Baker's family and the repose of his soul," Youngstown Bishop George Murry said in a statement Saturday.

After the settlements were announced, the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese in central Pennsylvania said it received complaints in 2011 of possible abuse by Baker at Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Bishop McCort High School hired an attorney to investigate after several former students alleged they were molested by Baker in the 1990s. Attorney Susan Williams said three former students had talked to her in detail about the alleged abuse.

Baker taught and coached at John F. Kennedy High School in the late 1980's and early 1990's and was at Bishop McCort from 1992-2000.

Bishop Mark Bartchak of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese said in a statement that he was saddened by the news of Baker's death, but declined further comment citing pending legal action involving the diocese.

A message left for Father Patrick Quinn, the head of Baker's order, the Third Order Regular Franciscans, was not immediately returned.

Judy Jones, assistant Midwest director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said the organization still hopes people who know about other abuse allegations against Baker will continue to come forward.

"We feel sad for Br. Baker's family but even sadder for the dozens of boys who Baker assaulted," she said in a statement.

Liquid crystal's chaotic inner dynamics

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Scientists have unearthed a new dynamic process induced by strong electric fields in thin liquid crystal cells.

Liquid crystal displays are ubiquitous. Now, Polish physicists have demonstrated that the application of a very strong alternating electric field to thin liquid crystal cells leads to a new distinct dynamic effect in the response of the cells. The theory of spatio-temporal chaos explains this effect. It was elucidated by Wojciech Je?ewski and colleagues from the Institute of Molecular Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, in Pozna?, Poland, and is about to be published in EPJ E. This effect has implications for the operation of liquid-crystal devices because their operation is based on the electro-optic switching phenomenon, subject to the newly discovered effect.

The authors first applied an alternating electric field to semi-transparent, conducting plates of cells containing a liquid crystal substance. Such systems are characterised by a spontaneous electric polarisation that can be reversed by the application of an external electric field.

The Je?ewski team then registered the resulting molecular reorientations by recording changes in the intensity of light transmitted by the liquid crystal sample, or spectra. In particular, the authors experimentally identified a distinct high-frequency band in the response, reflecting the activation of a specific dynamic process inside the sample.

Theoretical studies of the complex molecular reorientation dynamics confirmed experimental observations. The team explained the response of the sample by numerically solving the equation describing the motion of molecules subjected to very strong alternating fields. Unlike previous approaches, these simulations did not make any assumption about the sample dynamics.

The effect they showed was associated with a chaotic molecular reorientation induced by a strong field of sufficiently high frequency. Furthermore, a unique experimental setup led to signals, due to strong excitations of liquid crystals at frequencies less than the frequency of the external electric field, being registered.

Workplace link to 1 in 6 cases of adult asthma among ... - Health.am

? Asthma ? Jan 21, 2013

The strongest evidence seems to be for jobs involving cleaning or cleaning agents, the research suggests.

The authors base their findings on the job histories up to the age of 42 of almost 7,500 British adults born in 1958, all of whom were taking part in the National Child Development Study, which is tracking the long term health of more than 11,000 people living in Britain.

Information about symptoms of asthma or wheezy bronchitis was collected at the ages of 7, 11, 16, 33 and 42 from 9,500 participants.

After excluding 2,000 who had these symptoms before the age of 16, the remainder were tested for sensitivity to allergens and their lung power between the ages of 42 to 45. Participants were also asked about their work history at the ages of 33 and 42.?

Their exposure to compounds known to be associated with asthma was calculated using the Asthma Specific Job Exposure Matrix (ASJEM). This assigns workplace exposure to 18 different high risk antigens, environments, and respiratory irritants.

One in four were smokers by the age of 42, when the cumulative prevalence of asthma that had started in adulthood was 9%. Most (87%) were in employment at age 42, and over half (55%) had office jobs.

What is Adult-Onset Asthma?

When a doctor makes a diagnosis of asthma in people older than 20, it is known as adult-onset asthma.

Among those who may be more likely to get adult-onset asthma are:

Women who are having hormonal changes, such as those who are pregnant or who are experiencing menopause
Women who take estrogen following menopause for 10 years or longer
People who have just had certain viruses or illnesses, such as a cold or flu
People with allergies, especially to cats
People who are exposed to environmental irritants, such as tobacco smoke, mold, dust, feather beds, or perfume. Irritants that bring on asthma symptoms are called ?asthma triggers.? Asthma brought on by workplace triggers is called ?occupational asthma.?

What is the Difference Between Childhood Asthma and Adult-Onset Asthma?

Adults tend to have lower lung capacity (the volume of air you are able to take in and forcibly exhale in one second) after middle age because of changes in muscles and stiffening of chest walls. This decreased capacity may cause doctors to miss the diagnosis of adult-onset asthma.

Around one in four participants had only ever worked in a job that was zero risk, according the ASJEM. Just under one in 10 (8%) had ever been exposed to high risk agents; while a further 28% had ever been exposed to low risk agents. Around one in three (34%) had ever been exposed to both.

There are many occupations that are thought to cause asthma, say the authors. And in this study the start of asthma in adulthood was clearly linked to 18 types of job, including farming, which more than quadrupled the risk, hairdressing, which almost doubled the risk, and printing, which tripled the risk.

Four of these 18 jobs were cleaning jobs, and a further three were likely to involve exposure to cleaning agents.

After taking account of factors likely to influence the results, people exposed to low risk agents were 20% more likely to have asthma diagnosed as an adult than those who had not been exposed to any risk.

Those exposed only to high risk agents were 53% more likely to have the condition, while those exposed to both types of agents were 34% more likely to do so.

The high risk agents implicated were flour, enzymes, cleaning/disinfectant products, metal and metal fumes, and textile production.

About 22 million Americans have asthma.

Gender
Before puberty, asthma occurs more often in males, but after adolescence, it is common in females. In adults with similar cases of actual airway obstruction, women are likely to report more severe symptoms than men.

Hormonal fluctuations or changes in hormone levels may play a role in the severity of asthma in women. Between 30 - 40% of women with asthma experience fluctuations in severity that are associated with their menstrual cycle. Some women first develop asthma during or shortly after pregnancy, while others first develop it around the time of menopause (perimenopause).

Race and Ethnicity
African-Americans have higher rates of asthma than Caucasians or other ethnic groups. They are also more likely to die of the disease. Ethnicity and genetics, however, are less likely to play a role in these differences than socioeconomic differences, such as having less access to optimal health care, and greater likelihood of living in an urban area (another asthma risk factor).

Obesity
Studies report a strong association between obesity and asthma. Evidence also suggests that people who are overweight (body mass index greater than 25) have more difficulty getting their asthma under control. Weight loss in anyone who is obese and has asthma or shortness of breath helps reduce airway obstruction and improve lung function.

Other Risk Factors

GERD. At least half of patients with asthma have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the cause of heartburn. It is not entirely clear which condition causes the other or whether they are both due to common factors. Treating GERD does not appear to improve asthma control.

Aspirin-Induced Asthma. About 10% of adults and fewer children have aspirin-induced asthma (AIA). With this condition, asthma gets worse when patients take aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). AIA often develops after a viral infection. It is a particularly severe asthmatic condition, associated with many asthma-related hospitalizations. In about 5% of cases, aspirin is responsible for a syndrome that involves multiple attacks of asthma, Sinusitis, and nasal congestion. Such patients also often have polyps (small benign growths) in the nasal passages. Patients with aspirin-induced asthma (AIA) should avoid aspirin and other NSAIDs, including ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve).

All in all, the authors calculated that 16% of adult onset asthma among those born in the late 1950s could be explained by the types of jobs held.

Circa Raises $750K From Group Including Lerer Ventures To Revolutionize Mobile News Delivery

5330338315_87ec63d4be_zWe’ve learned today that mobile news-delivery company Circa has raised another $750K on top of the $900K raised previously. The company launched its app of the same name, which allows you to follow an often-changing story in bite-sized chunks, only three months ago. A few more big names have joined in this up-round, including: Lerer Ventures, Advancit Capital, Menlo Talent Fund, Alex Bard and Eamon Leonard. Those investors join individual contributors from its previous 900K raised, including Dave Morin, David Karp and Josh Spear, as well as firms such as Quotidian Ventures and SK Ventures. When I spoke to Circa’s co-founder and CEO Matt Galligan today, he told me that he’s extremely happy about the growth of its userbase as well as how the app itself is coming along. The team announced version 1.1, which included some design and usability tweaks that Galligan is specifically proud of. Circa currently employs seven non-editorial staffers and 12 others who manage the current news categories within the app. Regarding the funding, Lerer Partner and former CEO of Huffington Post, Eric Hippeau, had this to say: We think Circa has developed the right technology and persona to capture a large audience looking for their mobile devices as their main source of news. Growth is on the horizon, as far as what types of content you’ll be able to find within Circa. Galligan tells us “Right now, we’re exploring what categories that we want to go into next,” mentioning such verticals as Business and Sports. When thinking about what makes Circa different, Galligan says if you think of CNN as something that has nailed TV coverage of news and Huffington Post as a publication that does well on the web, Circa can be that application for mobile news delivery. Circa allows you to follow an ongoing story, like Lance Armstrong admitting that he doped during his cycling career. It updates as individual bits of information come in, rather than making you read an entirely new story each and every time. Galligan also says that Circa has been approached by large news outlets that are interested in working with his company to adopt its format. With the money, it seems like Circa will continue to hire and work on perfecting what it believes will be a format that publications will want to pay closer attention to as time goes on. HBT: Ellsbury signs one-year, $9 million deal with Sox

Jacoby Ellsbury will make $9 million in his final season before becoming a free agent, as the center fielder and the Red Sox avoided arbitration with a one-year contract.

Ellsbury was injured for more than half the season and hit just .271 with a .682 OPS when in the lineup, which represented a 250-point drop from his OPS in a breakout 2011 campaign.

However, he was paid $8.05 million last season and arbitration is designed to hand out raises with each added year of service time. With a strong 2013 he could be in line for a huge long-term deal as a 30-year-old free agent, but obviously there are plenty of reasons for the Red Sox to be wary of locking up Ellsbury before then.

High-tech Dreamliner's wings clipped by battery trouble

WHEN it went into service a little over a year ago, Boeing's 787 Dreamliner was hailed as a miracle of cutting-edge innovation ? the Chicago-based company used lithium-ion batteries, a carbon-fibre fuselage, and blazing fast computer networks to cut down on fuel consumption and provide passengers with a ride like no other.

But following a series of mostly electrical mishaps - including a battery fire aboard a 787 at Boston's Logan International Airport last week - the current global fleet of 50 planes now sits idle. The US National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the plane's electrical systems. And the US Federal Aviation Administration, which declared the plane airworthy in 2011, is questioning their own certification process.

The plane's lithium-ion batteries, which also appear to have acted up and forced an All Nippon Airways 787 to make an emergency landing at Takamatsu airport in western Japan this week, store twice the power of nickel-cadmium cells, making them much lighter. However, they are a known fire risk under some operating conditions.

No-one yet knows if the batteries themselves - built by GS Yuasa of Japan and packaged by Thales of France - were at fault, or if there's an issue with the wiring, or electronics, they plug into.

Long-standing concern

The FAA's concern over the batteries goes back as far as 2007, when it warned Boeing that the company could only use lithium-ion batteries if its battery charging, management and failure alarm systems can cope with their unique risks. Li-ion batteries, the FAA said, are susceptible to self-sustaining increases in temperature and pressure if they are overcharged "which leads to formation of highly unstable metallic lithium which can ignite, resulting in a self-sustaining fire or explosion."

Because the Boston battery fire is under investigation by the NTSB, Boeing spokeswoman Lori Gunter cannot yet comment on what happened. But she says the 787 is built to cope with any problem the batteries throw at it. "It is designed to be able to handle any faults that we would expect to see from the battery," she told New Scientist.

Boeing's rival, Airbus of Toulouse, France, uses smaller lithium batteries in its A380 jet to power emergency lighting, but plans to increase its reliance on the batteries in the forthcoming A350. "Lithium ion batteries can be designed in very different ways, with different chemistries, electronic protections, capacities and number of cells," says an Airbus spokesman. "The way a battery is integrated in the aircraft is important, as well as the protections that are put in place."

Better sensors

Smart in-battery sensors could be an answer, say Gi-Heon Kim and colleagues at the National Renewable Energy Center in Golden, Colorado. They are developing a "fail-safe" Li-ion battery that incorporates a passive early warning system (Journal of Power Sources, DOI: 10.1016/j.jpowsour.2012.03.015) that senses the structural defects in a Li-ion battery cell that can lead to the thermal runaway that leads to fires. When it does so, it isolates the cell from the battery long before trouble occurs. Better still, says Kim, "this technology is independent of battery chemistry and cell design" - so could apply to the Li-ion cells used in phones, electric cars and aviation.

The outcome of the investigations into the battery issues will also resonate off-planet, as the International Space Station is about to have its power sources upgraded to more powerful Li-ion cells from GS Yuasa. "NASA is in close communication with Boeing, the FAA, and the cell manufacturer on the ongoing failure analysis, and will apply any relevant lessons learned as appropriate," a NASA spokesman told New Scientist.

Ford remained Europe?s No. 2 best-selling car brand for the fifth consecutive year in 2012, boosted by a strong performance in the UK and growth in Russia.

?While 2012 was a very challenging year for the entire industry, we?re pleased with customer reaction to our newest products and we?re poised to build momentum in 2013 with a huge wave of new vehicles coming to market,? said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Ford of Europe Marketing, Sales and Service.

In 2012, Ford sold more than 1.1 million vehicles in its traditional 19 European markets, including 60,000 in December, and more than 1.4 million vehicles across the full European region of 51 markets, including 100,000 in December. Ford?s market share in its traditional 19 markets was 7.9 per cent for the year, down 0.4 percentage points on 2011.

In the UK, Ford sales increased by 3 per cent to 347,000 units. With a total vehicle market share of 14.9 per cent, Ford completed 2012 as the UK?s car market leader for the 36th consecutive year and best-selling commercial vehicle brand for the 46th successive year. Fiesta remained the UK?s best-selling car for the fourth consecutive year.

In Germany, Ford?s second largest market by volume, full year share was 6.8 per cent, with a sales volume of 230,900 for the year. ?We maintained a disciplined approach in 2012 amid some very deep discounting in the marketplace and we will continue to take a balanced approach in 2013,? de Waard said. ?We will stay competitive and fight for share but also protect our brand image and residual values.?

Ford?s sales in Russia grew 10.8 per cent to 130,800 vehicles last year, making the country Ford?s third-largest market by volume in the European region. In Turkey, Ford retained its market leadership for the 11th consecutive year, while in Eastern Europe, Ford sales were up 2.5 per cent at 50,900 vehicles.

Growing new vehicle momentum
Ford?s new vehicles continue to develop strong momentum in the market, with sales of the new B-MAX surpassing 15,000.? B-MAX was recently voted AUTOBEST 2013 by leading auto journalists from 15 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, and is also on the shortlist of the 2013 European Car of the Year.

The Fiesta remains Ford?s top-selling car with 302,000 sold in 2012. The new Fiesta, already on sale in markets such as the UK and Germany is now ? like the B-MAX, Focus, and C-MAX ? equipped with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, the International Engine of the Year 2012.

?With the new Fiesta, Fiesta ST, Kuga, Transit, Transit Connect, Tourneo Connect and EcoSport, and new technologies like MyKey and SYNC with Emergency Assistance, we?re in an unprecedented expansion of new vehicle and technology launches. We?re bringing 15 global vehicles to Europe within five years. We expect 2013 will be challenging for the entire European auto industry, but the vehicle and brand actions we are taking this year will help to strengthen our business,? de Waard concluded.

N.Y. Finance Firm Still Owes Most of $10-Million 9/11 Pledge ...

January 14, 2013, 10:40 am

A major New York financial house that last week announced a $10-million donation for Superstorm Sandy relief has yet to pay most of an identical pledge it made nearly five years ago to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, Crain?s New York Business writes.

Cantor Fitzgerald?which lost 658 employees in the Sept. 11, 2001, attack, the most of any company at the World Trade Center?has turned over less than a tenth of the April 2008 museum gift, a source told?Crain?s. A spokesman for the financial-services firm said it intends to fully satisfy the pledge but that there is no deadline for payment.

Cantor Fitzgerald said that it would donate $10-million to Sandy relief in the form of $1,000 cash gifts to families in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island, and New Jersey that suffered hurricane losses, the Associated Press reports.

Schools duck 'moral duty' to dish up healthy meals ? Steve Beasant

Academies and free schools are failing in their ?moral duty? to ensure children are getting healthy school meals, local government leaders are warning.

The Local Government Association is concerned that more than one million children attending independently run free schools or academies could be eating poor quality meals that don?t meet legal food standards because of a worrying exemption in legislation.

Unlike council maintained schools, academies and free schools can opt out of the national food standards that stop canteens dishing up turkey twizzlers or installing vending machines full of crisps, chocolate and sugary drinks.

The LGA is now urging government to introduce one single food standard applicable to all schools to ensure every child has the best opportunity to receive a nutritious school lunch.

It comes as councils across the country are gearing up to take on a greater public health role from April, which will include responsibilities such as tackling childhood obesity and delivering the National Child Measurement Service.

This will give local authorities an even greater role in ensuring the health and fitness of our children. One of the key factors of this will be giving children a good and healthy school lunch while also teaching them about the importance of good food.

Councillor David Simmonds, Chairman of the LGA?s Children and Young People Board, said:

?With councils taking up the challenge of tackling obesity and poor diet as part of their new public health responsibilities, the last thing we need is to see junk food back on the menu in our local schools. This is of particular concern for children having free school meals where school lunch is often their main meal of the day.

?We know parents want school lunches that are healthy and nutritious, whatever type of school their child attends. School autonomy is supposed to drive up standards but in the case of school meals we now have a two-tier system where one type of school can effectively exempt pupils from healthy choices and instead sell fatty and sugary foods. This threatens to seriously impact on the health and educational attainment of our children.

?As champions for parents and children, councils with new public health responsibilities will want to hold all schools to account if they are ducking their moral duty to give students the best chance of living a happy and healthy life.

?History shows us that voluntary guidelines alone do not work to drive up standards. We now need government to do its part by introducing an acceptable food standard that will allow councils to hold all schools to account for the nutritional quality of food they serve their pupils.?

According to research by the Children?s Food Trust, nine in ten academies are selling children junk food such as crisps, chocolate and cereal bars that are banned in maintained schools to protect pupil?s health.

One in six schools reported selling confectionery, one in four sold crisps and savoury snacks, more than half sold cereal bars ? often as high in sugar as confectionery ? and more than three-quarters sold soft drinks.

The same study showed that academies can make between ?3,000 and ?15,000 a year from selling junk food to their pupils.

Currently more than 50 per cent of secondary schools in England are either academies or in the process of becoming academies and there is a growing number of primary schools also converting. In addition, a further 102 new free schools have been approved to open in 2013 and beyond.

More than 1,250,000 pupils now attend academies, which means around one in seven pupils in state schools now attends an academy school. This increases to one in three pupils in state secondaries.

The law on nutritional standards was tightened in England for local authority primary schools in 2008 and secondaries in 2009.

95% The Central Park Five

All Critics (61) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (58) | Rotten (3)

Expect your blood pressure to rise during The Central Park Five.

The doc is rife with smart or wrenching or shameful moments. The fresh interviews with the accused, now men, are invaluable.

As grim a portrait of the criminal justice system as can be imagined.

How could this second crime have occurred? The film asks that question but only partly answers it, and in the process it raises an even more troubling one.

"The Central Park Five" is worth seeing, both for the ways it's timeless and for the ways it encapsulates an era.

What's amazing about listening to them speak now, often through tears, is the absence of bitterness.

Like the "Paradise Lost" films, it's a shocking but clear-eyed portrait of injustice.

The Central Park Five is such a moving piece of work, it is difficult to watch at times.

It shows what happens when police and prosecutors abuse their power.

Puts the crime and the times in sharp perspective.

Burns and company conduct a thorough, riveting investigation that does a far better job of assessing the tragedy than the justice system did two decades before. Of course, hindsight is an advantage we all take for granted.

It's a gripping story that comes in a well-crafted package.

A heartbreaking expose' about a rush to judgment which ruined five, innocent young lives.

Exclusive interviews with former heads of Israel's counter terrorism agency reveal insiders' analysis about the country's policies. Fascinating. Frightening.

"The Central Park Five" is a sobering indictment of racism and vigilante justice, yet it is constrained by a PBS-style deference to the very system it critiques.

You can't help but wonder why this film wasn't made 20 years ago, when it could have saved these men some time behind bars.

What keeps the film from being an impossible downer is the guts and spirit and smart words of the Central Park Five, four of whom, now freed, are interviewed at length.

A miscarriage of justice on this scale would have been tragic had it resulted from an honest mistake - but, as this meticulously researched movie makes clear, honesty had little to do with it.

The [documentary] team builds a solid story from the time of the crime through the release from prison those wrongly accused and railroaded into confessing to a crime they did not commit.

Moldable Sanding Blocks Are the Perfect Shape For Any Abrasion

Sanding blocks are fantastic labor-savers, but if you're sanding ornate carvings, the sandpaper typically has to mold to your fingertips. Taking the idea of a malleable foam sanding block to the next level, these Sandables are made from a moldable material so they can be reshaped to conform to any angle, curve, or random shape. Game-based economics research explains why we roll the dice on flu shots

Jan. 11, 2013 ? With 41 states having reported widespread and severe outbreaks of flu this season, timely new research sheds light on why less than half of the American population has gotten a flu shot.

Despite widespread knowledge that a vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances of catching and spreading the flu, even three of the four main TODAY show anchors recently admitted they had not gotten a flu shot (until they did so live on the air).

Using an online computer game that simulates the spread of an infectious disease among its players, researchers at Wake Forest University learned more about what motivates people to protect themselves from infection -- from the flu to whooping cough.

The study, the first in the economics of disease control using virtual diseases, was conducted by economists Fred Chen, Allin Cottrell and Amanda Griffith, and computer scientist Yue-Ling Wong.

"When it comes to policies for disease control, one size does not fit all. Some people are very risk tolerant and some are super risk averse. Our research shows that to prevent an epidemic, there is a need to tailor a menu of options for different kinds of people," said Chen, who studies economic epidemiology.

When studying how best to contain epidemics, scientists and policy makers often must make assumptions in mathematical models about how many people will or will not take preventive measures to keep from getting sick. The virtual epidemic experiment allowed first-hand observation about how people really behave when faced with choices about whether or not to self-protect during a widespread occurrence of infection in a community.

Rolling the dice to stay healthy

The multiplayer game simulates an epidemic among the players over several weeks. At the beginning of each day of the game, healthy players have the option to choose, at a cost, a protective action that reduces the likelihood of getting infected.

"We can't do in real life what we can do in the game," said Griffith. "We can't give some people treatment and others not. The game gave us a way to conduct an experiment on behavior that could never be done in real life."

Because self-protecting involves a cost, players earned the highest number of points by staying healthy and not choosing the preventative measures. At the end of the game, players knew they would receive a gift card with a value equal to the total number of points earned in the game -- an incentive to play honestly.

The experiment was conducted twice. In one game, the cost for players to self-protect was low, in the other it was higher. Players in the low cost condition were significantly more likely to make the choice to protect themselves from infection.

"Players were rolling the dice to see if they could stay healthy without paying the costs of protection. But even those players who were more inclined to take risks chose to self-protect the more often they got sick," Chen said.

The results can be applied to many illnesses from the common cold to sexually transmitted diseases, where there are costs, financial or otherwise, to taking a preventative measure. For example, in the face of an outbreak of flu, preventative costs might include a fear of negative side effects from taking a vaccination, a fear of needles, lost pay for time away from work, the gas cost of driving to a flu shot center and the time spent waiting in line for a vaccination as well as, for some, the cost of the vaccination itself.

Successfully promoting preventative measures

The study shows that to reduce disease prevalence, policies that reduce the cost of self-protection can be helpful, such as offering paid time off for employees who get flu shots or providing free flu shots onsite.

The research also showed that as the number of players infected increased, so, too, did the number of players who chose to protect themselves from infection.

"At the start of each day, participants could see how many players in the game were infected. As the number of sick players increased, more healthy players chose to take the preventative measure. During a bad cold and flu season like the one we are in this winter, more people may may be willing to take extra precautions if they know how many people in their community are sick," Chen said.

Researchers also found that players who got infected at a higher rate were more likely to take precautionary action in the future and that people's willingness to engage in safe behavior increases or decreases over time depending on the seriousness of the epidemic.
