Updated Google Search on iOS on par with Android

Google Search

Google today let loose a new version of its Search app for iOS devices. Is it as good as the voice search you find in Android and Google Now? When it comes to results, yes. That is to say, when we took Google's test questions for a spin, using Google Now to launch the search (just because we felt like it) we got the same results -- in just about the same response time -- on a Galaxy Nexus as we did on iOS 6.

Why'd we use the same questions Google highlighted on its blog post announcing the update? For one simple reason: Siri, for want of an better term, sucks. And anyone who's ever tried to do the same searches Apple showcased in its advertisements is quite possibly still waiting for an answer. So we wanted to put Google's examples to the test. And we threw in one wild card at the end.

How'd they stack up? Pretty evenly matched, I think. You'd expect the results to be the same, of course. Response time is what I was really curious about. Have a gander at the video after the break and see for yourself.

Natural Red Hair Linked To Skin Cancer

(NDJ) ? Fair skinned people are more sensitive to contracting skin cancer when exposed to the sun. Natural redheads however, are even more prone to contracting deadly skin cancer, even without sun, according to a new study.

Not only is this group more vulnerable to the sun?s ultraviolet (UV) rays, but a study in mice has shown the pigment that gives hair a red hue may in itself have cancer-causing effects, said a paper published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Co-author David Fisher, cancer center director at Massachusetts General Hospital, said: ?We studied melanoma formation in ?redheaded? mice and discovered that the red pigment had an ability to promote melanoma formation, even in the absence of ultraviolet radiation exposure?.

?This was a surprising result for us, because we expected that fair-skinned people get melanoma due to weak protection from sunlight and ultraviolet radiation. However the results suggest that even without UV exposure, the red pigment may contribute to melanoma formation by damaging healthy cells.?

Light-skinned people and redheads with freckles have trouble producing the black-grown pigment eumelanin, which absorbs harmful UV rays ? instead this group of people produces the red-yellow pigment pheomelanin which provides a weak UV shield.

United States cancer researchers Mizuho Fukunaga-Kalabis and Meenhard Herlyn wrote in a comment carried by Nature: ?completely avoiding UV rays would not protect red-haired people from melanoma?.

The suggest that ?red-haired individuals should undergo frequent dermatological skin checks, besides avoiding sun exposure.?

According to the World Health Organization about 132,000 cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, are diagnosed each year and two to three million cases of non-melanoma cancers; the numbers rise each year.

The Hot Wheels Camaro: no longer just a toy

Chevrolet

Hot Wheels has been producing replicas of the Camaro since 1968, a year after the real Chevy pony car first landed in showrooms.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, TheDetroitBureau.com

Chevrolet and Mattel have had a long and prosperous relationship. The toy company has been producing matchbox-sized replicas of the Camaro since 1968, a year after the real Chevy pony car first landed in showrooms.

At the upcoming SEMA auto show in Las Vegas, the automaker plans to return the favor, introducing the first production version of the?Chevrolet Camaro to bear a Hot Wheels badge.

TheDetroitBureau: Iconic London 'black' cab could soon vanish

Chevy has used the Hot?Wheels theme for several years at its SEMA stand. Last year, it positioned a bright yellow version of the Camaro at the base of a life-size track.? But now the automaker plans to actually add a Hot Wheels edition to its lineup.? It will come as a $6,995 upgrade on both the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro and Camaro convertible. Sales are scheduled to begin early next year.

For the money, the special edition will get a bright metallic paint scheme, special graphics, red-lined 21-inch wheels and Hot Wheels flame badges on the fenders and trunk lid.

TheDetroitBureau: Nation?s fastest highway opens

The Hot Wheels Camaro will feature matte-black touches around the hood and taillight surrounds. And the upgrade will also borrow some trim pieces from the high-performance Camaro ZL1 package, including the rear spoiler, front grille and front splitter.

The black leather-trimmed interior will boast Hot Wheels logos embroidered on the front seats, which are finished in red and black stitching.? The Hot Wheels flame will adorn the door interiors with special Hot Wheels Edition sill plates completing the package.

Chevrolet?s MyLink infotainment package will come standard.

TheDetroitBureau: Chevy moving up-market with Sonic Dusk

The Hot Wheels Camaro can be ordered with either the Chevy 2LT package with its 3.6-liter V-6, rated at its stock 323 horsepower, or the 400-hp 2SS package featuring the 6.2-liter L99 V-8.? The 2SS will be delivered with a dual-mode exhaust system, as will the 2LT equipped with a manual gearbox.

Chevy can only hope to match the success of the 1:64 edition Camaros that Mattel has sold by the millions over the last 44 years. The pony car was one of 16 original Hot Wheels models ? a favor being returned as the Chevrolet Hot Wheels Camaro becomes the first production car to carry the toy series? name.

The DetroitBureau: Honda designs car exclusively for women

The project was launched in 2010 and initially was focused on the concept model unveiled at the SEMA show last year. The final production design for the 2013 street car was taken from one of five sketches worked up by Hot Wheels chief designer Felix Holst.

?It?s been nearly 20 years since I started designing?cars for Hot Wheels and I have yet to drive one home,? said Holst, the vice president of creative for the Mattel Wheels Division. ?Personally, I can?t wait to open the doors and see the Hot Wheels Camaro sitting in the garage.?

We Have Class Tomorrow :( | Bwog

Update, 5:40 pm: Barnard will also have class tomorrow.

According to an email from Columbia?s Emergency Management Operations Team, we (undergrads and most grad students) have class tomorrow! The reason? ?Our students will only benefit by beginning to reengage in the purposeful work that brings our University community?and our City?together each day.?

The med school, School of Public Health, School of Continuing Education, School of the Arts, UTS, and Teachers College all canceled classes. (Barnard has not announced whether classes are canceled, but it?s likely they?re not.) NYU canceled classes, there?s still no public transit, and NYC public schools and libraries are closed. And yet, we have class. But look on the bright side: in two days, it?ll be Fall Break.

Full statement:

UNIVERSITY STATEMENT REGARDING RESUMPTION OF CLASSES
FOR WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 31, 2012

As our city and region recover from the serious impact of Hurricane Sandy, the University will begin resuming classes tomorrow, Wednesday, October 31, with the following exceptions:

The Mailman School of Public Health on the Medical Center campus will not hold classes;

On the Morningside Campus, the School of Continuing Education and the School of the Arts graduate classes will not be held, but undergraduate classes in the School of the Arts will meet.

We know that transportation within the five boroughs and wider metropolitan area will remain a challenge for several days to come and that there will inevitably be some students, faculty and staff who may have special difficulty reaching our campuses. We want to emphasize that everyone whose families, homes and neighborhoods have been severely affected by the storm have our full support in attending to their needs on the home front in the days ahead.

We are fortunate to have large populations of students, faculty and staff living in, or within close walking distance of, our campus communities, which escaped significant damage from the storm. Our students will only benefit by beginning to reengage in the purposeful work that brings our University community ? and our City?together each day.

Administrative and support staff should report to work on Wednesday. If that presents difficulties, please contact your supervisor. Faculty members and teaching assistants who cannot reach campus tomorrow should try to follow normal procedures to inform their students that a particular class will not be held, as they would do with other instances such as missing class due to illness. Teaching assistants should follow the same protocol in regard to recitation sections or other academic sessions. To be sure, we appreciate that because of flooding and power outages elsewhere, it may sometimes be impossible to alert students of a class cancellation.

We encourage faculty members to be flexible and creative in making provision for students who may themselves not be able to reach campus, such as providing class materials including notes from lectures and discussions. Please do not hesitate to contact your deans and department chairs for more information and guidance, if needed.

We will continue to update the University community about the status of activities and operations depending largely on decision-making by State and City about travel and transit conditions. For example, because of limited staffing, we can expect that some campus services will be reduced this week.

It is also worth note that this coming Monday and Tuesday remain scheduled University holidays.

With patience, understanding and flexibility, the University can move forward with the rest of our City and region in reestablishing our daily lives and work in the days ahead.
