University of Florida astronomer reports rare case of gravitational lensing

You could say that the odds of seeing it were astronomical.

Yet there it was, 10 billion light-years from Earth, the most massive galaxy cluster ever seen at such a distance - with a gravity field so strong that it distorted the light of the galaxy behind it in a rare display called gravitational lensing.

"When I first saw it, I kept staring at it, thinking it would go away," said University of Florida astronomer Anthony Gonzalez, lead author of the study announcing the discovery. "The galaxy behind the cluster is a typical run-of-the-mill galaxy with a lot of young stars, but the galaxy cluster in front of it is a whopper for that range. However, it's really the way that the two systems are lined up that makes the occurrence truly remarkable."

Gravitational lensing, or bending of light from the distant galaxy, has never been observed behind a cluster at this range.

The team reports its findings in the July 10 issue of The Astrophysical Journal.

The cluster's mass is noteworthy because its distance from the telescope, 10 billion light-years, means that it was already in existence when the universe was only one-quarter of its present age. Currently accepted models for how the universe evolved suggest that relatively few of these clusters were around when the universe was young.

Just finding the cluster itself might be considered lucky considering the team was exploring a mere 9-square degree patch of sky.

"If you extend your arm in front of you and hold up your index finger," Gonzalez said. "Your finger covers approximately 1-square degree of sky." So finding a massive cluster at that range that is also gravitationally lensing is a real long shot, even if you were looking at the whole sky, he said.

Researchers initially found the cluster using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. But they first saw evidence of the gravitational lensing in 2010 images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. They used data from the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy, or CARMA, radio telescope and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to independently verify its mass and distance.

Gonzalez said that finding a cluster of that magnitude at that distance in such a small field of observation could mean that scientists have underestimated how many massive clusters were in existence 10 billion years ago. In other words, perhaps the odds of spotting the cluster were not as great as the models predict.

"We just don't know," he said. "We need to find more clusters at this range so that we can get more data. So far we only have one example to study."

And you might say that they are lucky to have that.

Students suspended in NY bus monitor bullying

(AP Photo/Steven Senne)

(AP) ? Four seventh-grade students from upstate New York who were caught on video mercilessly taunting a 68-year-old bus monitor have received their punishment.

The school system in the Rochester suburb of Greece says it will suspend the middle school students from school and from using regular bus transportation for a year for bullying Karen Klein.

The students will be transferred to a special alternative education program because the district is legally required to give them an education. Each student also will be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens.

They will be able to reapply to middle school after they complete the discipline.

In a statement, the school system said each of the students involved admitted wrongdoing, accepted the consequences and agreed to let the district publicly release the terms of their disciplinary action.

The cellphone video posted online by a fellow student drew millions of viewers. The video shows Klein trying her best to ignore a stream of profanity, insults and outright threats.

One student taunted: "You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they don't want to be near you." Klein's oldest son killed himself 10 years ago.

Eventually, Klein appears to break down in tears.

A fund drive that began with a goal of $5,000 to help Klein take a nice vacation raised more than $667,000 as of Friday.

Klein has received national attention through social and news media with interviews such as an appearance earlier this week on NBC's "Today" show. She was honored Thursday in Boston, where she was greeted by a youth cheerleading squad and escorted on a red carpet to receive an honorary Boston school bus monitor certificate.

Klein could not be reached for comment Friday. However, police have said Klein did not want the boys to face criminal charges.

In an Associated Press interview last week, Klein asked people to leave the boys alone.

"Threatening them? No. That's not the way to go about things," she said. "They're just kids.

"I don't want to judge anybody or put them in jail or anything like that. I just want them to learn a lesson."

WSYR-TV in Syracuse first reported the school district's decision.

The working capital finance industry has operated on a regional and local basis for many years. There has been a consolidation that has resulted in fewer effective commercial lenders which are capable of providing sound working capital financing in response to cost-cutting that has permeated many industries. This has happened in a relatively short period of time, and most business owners have been understandably confused about what this might mean for the future of their business financing efforts.

Obtaining accurate working capital advice is often difficult for small business owners. The rapidly-increasing number of economic and financial changes recently has further magnified the complexity of this challenge. There have been some unexpected and disappointing responses by business lenders to recent economic circumstances. The Working Capital Finance Journal is evaluating some of the commercial finance actions taken by business lenders as part of a straightforward effort to create a central clearinghouse of relevant information for business owners.

Small business owners should make a sincere effort to learn more about what is happening and what to do about it once they come to the realization that major changes are likely for business finance funding in the near future. Analyzing actions recently taken by business lenders should be a primary part of such an effort. The Working Capital Journal is one prominent example of a free public resource providing working capital help and facilitating a better understanding of the responses by business lenders to recent economic circumstances.

Because they have been excluded from obtaining any new business financing by many banks, some businesses such as restaurants are having an especially difficult time in surviving recently. The continuing effectiveness of merchant cash advance programs to obtain working capital quickly has been reported by The Working Capital Journal, and this is one of the few bright spots in recent business financing. This commercial financing approach should be actively considered for most businesses accepting credit cards. Merchant cash advance programs are effectively saving the day for many business owners after most banks have done a terrible job of providing working capital help and business loans in the midst of chaotic financial and economic conditions. Banks are not routinely providing sufficient small business financing help for restaurants and many other businesses. However, if a restaurant accepts credit cards in their business operations, they are likely to be able to obtain needed cash from merchant cash advances and credit card factoring.

Of course, for some time there have been ongoing complex problems for commercial borrowers to avoid when seeking commercial loans and working capital advice. Because even more uncertainties still appear to be present in the economy, this has produced a new set of business finance problems. It seems increasingly likely that prior standards for working capital finance and small business finance will continue to change rapidly and with very little advance warning from lenders.

Desperate RIM considering Windows switch, says report

RIM Microsoft Windows Switch Rumor

Things have gotten so bad for RIM that the company is willing to look at Nokia?s strategy for guidance, Reuters?reports. Citing unnamed sources, Reuters?says that RIM?s board is under enormous pressure to make drastic changes to its business model, which may include selling off its network business and forming a strategic partnership with Microsoft to sell BlackBerry devices that come equipped with the Windows Phone 8 operating system that?s due to be released next year. Specifically, the sources said that ?Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had approached RIM in recent months, looking to strike a partnership similar to the one the software giant has with Nokia.? RIM has spent much of the past year working on BlackBerry 10, the newest version of its operating system that is seen as make or break for the company. But with yesterday?s announcement that BlackBerry 10 will be delayed until at least the first quarter of 2013, it?s not too surprising that RIM is considering alternatives.

Energy savings program reaches 1000 homes! | Southeast Michigan ...

Southgate homeowner holds "This Home is Saving Energy" sign

BetterBuildings for Michigan reached 1,000 homes in southeast Michigan this week, helping each home save energy and stay more comfortable inside, even during the hot summer.

The 1,000th home represents a big milestone for the $30M grant that was awarded to the region in 2009. Funds are available to weatherize 3,000 more homes in the area by the end of the year. The program is open to residents of Detroit and 22 other cities throughout the region.

Items included in the assessment: Lightbulbs, thermostat, showerhead, faucet aerators

The assessment includes a programmable thermostat, 10 CFL lightbulbs, a low-flow showerhead and faucet aerators to help save energy.

So far the average homeowner is expected to save $235 per year on their energy bills, often with simple home improvement measures like sealing air leaks and installing a programmable thermostat. 20% of residents have gone beyond these basic measures and used the program?s financing to insulate their homes or purchase energy-efficient appliances.

In addition to keeping money in metro Detroiters? pockets, the energy savings add up to a big environmental benefit for the region. The program is keeping 1,240 metric tons of CO2 per year out of the atmosphere?the equivalent of burning 140,000 gallons of gasoline.

?Energy efficiency is a win-win-win. You save money, reduce energy use and create jobs,? said Jacob Corvidae of the Southeast Michigan Regional Energy Office, which operates the program locally. He added, ?And the best part is that your house is more comfortable. It can make a big difference, even in the summer.?

Residents interested in weatherizing their homes with BetterBuildings for Michigan may call 313-566-4801 or sign up online.

Final Fantasy 3 Changing Jobs, Now Available On Android Devices

Square Enix?s Final Fantasy III?is finally playable on Android outside of Japan, as the Google Play store has updated the app with international downloadability.

Japan-region Google users got their hands on the game last March, and PSP version is coming up this fall.

Getting that RPG for mobile use isn?t cheap, though. Picking it up for your Android device of choice will set you back a bit with a sizable $15.99?price tag.?Still, it?s not like the release isn?t specialized. FFIII?s official listed features include a few new goodies for those of you who couldn?t buy the game on DS or any iOS devices:

  • New and improved 3D visuals and story sequences only for Android
  • Smooth, intuitive touch-panel controls specifically tailored to Square Enix?s smartphone RPGs
  • Quicker browsing through the monster bestiary and other game records
  • New visual designs for the Job Mastery Cards

As long as your smartphone or tablet is running?Android 2.2 (Froyo) or better, you?re in good shape to get it for much cheaper than you would with the $40 DS game. Then again, most places sell it used for just 15-10 bucks or cheaper.

Texas A&M freshman in line for quarterback position arrested

Texas A&M freshman Johnny Manziel, considered an option for the Aggies? starting quarterback role vacated by Ryan Tannehill, was arrested Friday.

College Station police said an officer was on bicycle patrol in the Northgate entertainment district about 2 a.m. Friday when he noticed two men fighting. Police said a group of people were at the intersection of Church Avenue and First Street surrounding the men who were throwing punches.

Police said after they stopped the fight, officers asked Manziel for identification, and he handed them an ID that stated he was 21 years old.

He?s 19 years old.
Police said he did not look 21 years old, and when asked his age on several occasions, he kept confusing the year he was born. Police said a short time later officers found two other driver?s licenses, one fake and one real, in Manziel?s wallet.

Johnathon Paul Manziel, of College Station, was charged with disorderly conduct by fighting, a Class C misdemeanor, and with failure to identify and for having a fake driver?s license.

He remained in the Brazos County Jail on Friday morning in lieu of $6,435 bail.

Jobless claims tumble, but remain elevated

By msnbc.com staff and news wires

New claims for unemployment benefits dropped in the latest week, although they remain stuck at levels that show the job market remains soft.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that seasonally adjusted jobless claims slid?6,000 to 386,000. The four-week moving average, which smooths out wrinkles in the data, dropped 750 to 386,750.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims easing to 385,000 last week. The four-week moving average for new claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends, slipped 750 to 386,750.

The labor market has lost a step in recent months as uncertainty spawned by the debt crisis in Europe and an unclear fiscal policy path at home has made businesses reluctant to hire. However, there are no signs in the claims data that companies are responding to that uncertainty by laying off workers.

Jobless claims have barely moved since April and the lack of improvement suggests a fundamental weakness in the labor market.

Concerns about the jobs market prompted the Federal Reserve last week to ease monetary policy further by extending a program to re-weight bonds it already holds toward longer maturities to hold down borrowing costs.

A Labor Department official said there was nothing unusual in the state-level data and no state had been estimated.

The number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid fell 15,000 to 3.3 million in the week ended June 16.

That covered the survey period for June's unemployment rate. The jobless rate rose in May for the first time since last August and could remain elevated as most states stop offering extended benefits to the long-term unemployed.

Only six states and the District of Columbia were offering extended benefits in the week ended June 9. A total of 5.9 million people were claiming unemployment benefits under all programs during that period, up 71,724 from the previous week.

Reuters contributed to this report.?

Frisco Mayor Helps Douse House Fire

The mayor of Frisco has one sure vote if he chooses to run for re-election.

Mayor Maher Maso was driving home from a charity event when he spotted smoke.

"As I'm driving up Custer Road, I saw a little smoke, which quickly turned into a lot of smoke and caught my attention," he said.

As he got closer to the home along Custer Trail, he saw flames shooting from the back of the house.

Maso called 911 and walked up to the home, where he saw an older couple and their granddaughter watching television.

"When I saw through the glass of the front door, there was people in there," he said. "I knocked pretty hard -- probably scared the living daylights out of the couple."

Maso convinced the couple to get out of the house, even though they didn't recognize the Frisco mayor.

And Maso -- still in his coat and tie -- didn't wait for firefighters.

"I wanted to see if they had a hose, and there was a hose there," he said. "I just connected it up and poured some water on the fire. It was really that simple."

The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived, and damage was contained to the outside of the house.

Maso is reluctant to say he saved three lives, but he's pretty confident he earned at least two votes in the next election.

"After, we were talking, and then he says, 'You know, I'm glad I voted for you.' He goes, 'Next time, I'll vote twice for you,'" Maso said with a laugh.

According to a report in the Dallas Morning News, pool equipment had caught fire near Bob Pollock's garage. Later, investigators said squirrels may have chewed through insulation, exposing wires, the paper reported.

NBC 5's Ellen Goldberg contributed to this report.

NFCC Financial Education Blog ? How to Avoid Being a Bad ...

By Jason Alderman

For many people, having roommates is a natural transition between leaving their parent?s house and buying their own home. It can be a great way to trim expenses and save for the future. But if you?re not careful, cohabitating can also devolve into constant bickering over finances and dirty dishes.

Roommate tensions are not limited to strangers. When cash-strapped young adults return to the nest, or older parents move in with grown kids for financial or caregiver assistance, long-suppressed family grievances can erupt if you?re not careful.

The key to living amicably with others is open communication. All parties must feel free to ask candid questions about their roommate?s financial situation and living preferences. Schedule regular meetings to discuss household issues and air any complaints or perceived inequities before they magnify and sour the relationship.??

Try to agree on as many living arrangement details as possible before moving in together. If you?re moving into an established household, make sure you understand and agree with how financial obligations and routine tasks will be divided. A few considerations:

  • The lease. Whoever signs the lease is responsible for paying rent and meeting other legal obligations, so you may want to have all roommates sign the lease if possible. That way, even though you?ll still be responsible for the rent if someone moves out suddenly, at least you?ll have some legal recourse to recover his or her share if they baulk at paying.
  • You may need the landlord?s permission for a new roommate to move in. The landlord may want to run a credit check and may even ask that a new lease be signed.
  • Rent. If one bedroom is more spacious or has a private bath, a 50/50 split may not seem fair. The same goes if assigned parking or other amenities aren?t equitable. Try to calculate rent amounts together so no one feels slighted later on.
  • Utilities. Find out which utilities are paid by the landlord and which you?ll split. Consider usage levels: Say one roommate works from home and runs the heat all day, or another never watches TV or uses the Internet. And, if cellphone reception is good enough, you may be able to do without a landline altogether, derailing arguments over phone bills.
  • Food. Some people are territorial about their food, especially when budgets are tight. Decide whether you?ll go in together on groceries, cleaning supplies and other household items or each buy your own, and set rules for replacing used items.????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
  • Decide who pays each bill. Many landlords (and utilities) will only accept a single check, so it?s up to everyone to settle up and pay each monthly bill on time. You can spread the risk by putting each utility in a different person?s name. Just remember, missed payments can damage the accountholder?s credit score or even get you evicted.
  • Renters insurance. Each roommate should carry their own renters insurance ? or get added to the other?s policy; otherwise your possessions and liability aren?t covered in case of theft or accident. Major purchases. If your place needs common area furniture or appliances, it may be simpler to buy pieces individually ? and keep the receipts ? so when you move there?s no question of ownership. For example, you buy the couch and your roommate buys the TV.
  • Keep an inventory. Inevitably, your possessions will get mixed in together. To make it easier when your household eventually disbands, make a list of who owns what ? your pots and pans, her lamp, his vacuum cleaner, etc.

You may want to draft a roommate agreement that establishes household rules and duties. While not necessarily legally binding, this document gives you each a chance to weigh in and may be a helpful tool if communications should later break down. Many examples are available online. In addition to the billing and cost-sharing information outlined above, also include details such as:

  • Rules for recovering your share of the security deposit.
  • Rules governing pets, houseguests, parties, noise, smoking, alcohol and other potential disagreements.
  • Housecleaning schedule and responsibilities.
  • Agreement about how to handle damages caused by roommates or their guests.
  • Move-out procedures, including how much notice is required, forwarding addresses, abandoned property and who is responsible for finding the new tenant.

Many web- and smartphone-based applications are available to help divvy up bills and track payments and due dates, including Splitwise, BillMonk and BillsAreIn. Or, you can always use a good old-fashioned Excel spreadsheet. The point is to develop a system and use it so at the end of the month there are no billing surprises.

This?article is intended to provide general information and should not be considered legal, tax?or financial advice. It?s?always a good idea to consult a legal, tax?or financial advisor for specific information on how certain laws apply to you and about your individual financial situation.

Facebook slides as underwriters give mixed ratings

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Wall Street analysts who know Facebook best are giving the company's stock a mixed review. Think: like, not love.

A flood of analyst reports from 33 banks gave Facebook's stock a mix of "Neutral" and "Buy" ratings on Wednesday. And there was at least one review that equated to a "Sell" rating.

It marked the end of the 40-day quiet period following Facebook's initial public offering. Analysts at banks that led the IPO were finally allowed to give public opinions on the stock, offering the first glimpse of what the IPO's underwriters really think about Facebook.

Facebook's much-ballyhooed IPO landed with a thud on May 18, with the stock closing just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It hasn't fared much better since. On Wednesday, it fell 87 cents, or 2.6 percent, to close at $32.23.

Morgan Stanley, the lead bank in the IPO, gave a $38 target price for Facebook's stock over the next 12 months. That's the same as the IPO price Facebook has failed to match since its first day of trading. The analyst, Scott Devitt, said Facebook has long-term opportunities in mobile advertising despite recent concerns.

"The mobile ad market remains in its infancy ? while we believe Facebook will lead the market in mobile ad targeting, agency and brand transitions to mobile may take longer than expected," Devitt wrote.

Facebook derives the bulk of its revenue from advertising on its website, and while it has been testing mobile ad products, it warned before its IPO that its mobile users are growing at a faster rate than the revenue that it's making from them. The disclosure spooked some investors ahead of the company's initial public offering last month, and likely contributed to the stock's lukewarm reception.

William Blair's Ralph Schackart also gave the stock an "Outperform" rating, and said Facebook is "becoming a daily utility," making it difficult for people to switch to a different platform.

"While virtual, the social interaction that users engage in via updates, status changes, likes, shares, and playlists, among others, builds long-term relationships and audiences," Schackart wrote.

Mark S. Mahaney of Citi Investment Research also called Facebook an Internet utility, comparing it with the likes of Amazon.com Inc. and Google Inc. Facebook, he noted, will soon reach 1 billion monthly users and 600 million daily average users.

"By any comparison, these are startlingly impressive metrics," wrote Mahaney in a note to investors. "Facebook could, in fact, become the largest (Internet) platform one day in terms of revenue and profits, given the size and engagement of its user base and its high-margin business model."

Nonetheless, Mahaney put a "Neutral" rating on Facebook's stock, calling the company's dual-class stock structure one of the biggest investment risks. Facebook, like several other technology and media companies, has two classes of shares in order to keep voting control in the hands of its executives and early employees. CEO Mark Zuckerberg controls the company through more than half of its voting stock.

Credit Suisse found "a lot to 'like'" with Facebook, but gave its stock a "Neutral" rating and a target price of $34. Analyst Spencer Wang said that while Facebook is in a good position to capitalize on the growth of social media, its stock price already reflects a "fair amount" of this growth, limiting his enthusiasm.

Goldman Sachs, which owns a small stake in Facebook and was one of the leading underwriters of its IPO, gave the social network a "Buy" rating. Analyst Heather Bellini said that the company is poised to dominate the next phase of the Internet's evolution, "and as such will maintain industry high growth rates throughout next decade."

A rare "Underperform" rating came from Daniel Salmon at BMO Capital Markets. He gave the stock a $25 target price and said that his research shows "mixed" opinions on the effectiveness of advertising on Facebook.

'Awkward' Cast Previews 'Shocking' Season Two Premiere

'Everything is still very fresh, very prevalent,' star Beau Mirchoff tells MTV News about premiere, airing tonight (June 28) on MTV.
By Jocelyn Vena

"Awkward" castmembers Brett Davern, Molly Tarlov and Beau Mirchoff
Photo:

If you thought things couldn't get any more — dare we say it — "Awkward" for Jenna on the hit MTV comedy of the same name, you should brace yourself for what's to come in season two.

After Jenna (played by Ashley Rickards) learned who wrote the infamous letter in season one that led many of her school peers to think she tried to commit suicide, she's now dealing with the aftermath at home. Oh yeah, she's also in the middle of a bit of a love triangle between new boy, Jake, and old beau, Matty.

And given the fast pace of tonight's (June 28) season premiere, expect her family and relationship drama to move along at a very rapid speed. "Season two takes place two weeks after the finale of season one, so everything is still very fresh, very prevalent," Beau Mirchoff, who plays Matty, explained to MTV News. "The love triangle hasn't been resolved, Sadie is as villainous as ever, all of her colors have shown. Jenna Hamilton has a lot of decisions to be made. I think the fans are going to love it."

Molly Tarlov, who plays aforementioned mean girl Sadie, explained that if you thought you were going to get lulled into Jenna's life drama this season, think again. "We really start season two in the first episode just full force into it. The story moves along so quickly in the first episode," she said. "There's a lot of stuff that I will not just say surprising, I will say absolutely shocking, and is gonna, if you watch the first episode, is going to be really shocking to you."

[Warning: Spoiler ahead!]

In addition to having to keep her love life in check, Jenna is also reeling from the news that her mother was the one who wrote the letter that forever changed her life. And that news will only make things harder for her at home as her mom tries to make it up to her, albeit not always in the most productive ways.

"There's a lot of, 'Anywhere Jenna Hamilton goes, awkwardness is gonna follow,' and that is very true with the letter as well," teased Brett Davern, who stars as Jake. "I think it's gonna cause some problems at home for her and within her family. And so, not only is her drama surrounding her school life, with us, the love triangle and all her friends and stuff, but also her at-home drama, I think, increases in season two as well."

Mirchoff added, "It doesn't become known to Matty and Jake. [They] possibly find out about it later in the season, but not right away."

Don't miss the season two premiere of "Awkward," tonight (June 28) at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (9:30 Central) on MTV!

Rights group says Apple suppliers in China breaking labor laws

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Apple Inc's suppliers in China have violated local labor laws when they imposed excessive overtime and skimped on insurance, a New York-based labor rights group said.

Apple and its suppliers such as Taiwanese tycoon Terry Gou's Foxconn Technology Group have been the target of labor rights groups, which say the world's most valuable technology company are making iPhones and iPads in massive sweat shops.

"From our investigations we found that the labor rights violations at Foxconn also exist in virtually all other Apple supplier factories, and in many cases, are actually significantly more dire than at Foxconn," China Labor Watch said in a 133-page report released on Thursday.

A four-month investigation through April showed workers work up to 180 hours of overtime a month during peak periods, exceeding the legal limit of 36 hours per month, the group said, citing Riteng, a unit of Taiwan's Pegatron Corp, as an example.

Some factories also omit medical insurance as required by the law while workers are exposed to hazardous conditions, according to the report.

China Labor Watch interviewed 620 workers at 10 factories run by Apple suppliers, including Toyo Precision Appliance and BYD Electronic (International) Co.

The group also spoke with workers at factories run by units of Quanta Computer Inc, Wintek Corp and U.S.-listed Jabil Circuit Inc.

The companies couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

"As part of our ongoing supplier responsibility program, our team has conducted thorough audits at every facility in China Labor Watch's report," Kristin Huguet, an Apple spokeswoman based in Cupertino, California, said in an e-mail.

"In some places, our auditors found issues similar to those described by China Labor Watch, including overtime violations," she said, when asked to comment on the report.

DISMAL CONDITIONS

The report singled out Riteng for dismal work conditions, saying workers work almost 12 hours a day, longer than 10 hours a day at Foxconn, Apple's main supplier.

Half of Riteng's workers described safety conditions as "bad," more than Foxconn's 2 percent, according to the report.

The average hourly wage at Riteng is 8.2 yuan ($1.29), well below the average rate 10.2 yuan at Foxconn.

The Pegatron unit was not immediately available for comment.

Labor groups say wages have generally been on the rise, though the growth has been slower than inflation.

"Wages are certainly going up, but they are still a very long way from what you consider a decent wage because inflation in the major cities in southern China is going up all the time," said Geoffrey Crothall of China Labor Bulletin.

"It's generally better at the larger factories, but the problem with Foxconn and a lot of the other Taiwanese, Hong Kong-owned manufacturers, the management culture there is still very authoritarian, quite dictatorial. People say it's quasi-military."

James Wu, a spokesman for Catcher Technology Co, which was also mentioned in the report, said the proportion of short-term labor it employs without having to provide severance compensation was actually lower than that described by China Labor Watch.

"Our dispatch rate is 20-30 percent, lower than the rate of around 80 percent mentioned in the report," Wu said.

Catcher also put their workers through a three-day training program to prepare them for their jobs.

"In summary, our company provides benefits for workers that exceed basic requirements," Wu said.

MAKING CHECKS

Apple said it had been making checks at its supply chain partners and regularly publishes reports on workers' situation on its website (http://www.apple.com/supplierresponsibility/).

The company, which monitors worker hours of more than 700,000 workers in its supply chain, said it had been following up to make sure suppliers comply with its labor standards.

Workers typically have little legal representation in China, where labor laws are sometimes not strictly enforced. Unions are also often not effective in providing feedback to management, labor rights groups said.

Following a spate of critical reports detailing unsafe factory practices at Foxconn plants that triggered worker deaths and suicides, Apple this year allowed the U.S.-based Fair Labor Association (FLA) to conduct a high-profile probe of Foxconn's factories in China.

"The process of change in our company continues, and competitive wages, improved living conditions and the abolition of the use of dispatched workers by our company are some examples of this," Foxconn said in an e-mailed statement.

"Our considerable investment in this process will change our industry through the positive example we are setting for other companies." ($1 = 6.3554 Chinese yuan)

Novel Catalytic Function of MUC1 for the Development of Cancer Therapeutics (TID-242)

This newly discovered function of MUC1 presents a novel target for the development of new cancer therapies and diagnostics.

MUC1 is a membrane bound mucin protein that is overexpressed in 90% of epithelial carcinomas.? Due to its overexpression in a wide variety of tumors, MUC1 is considered an ideal target for the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics.? Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center recently discovered a new function of MUC1.? Research led by Dr. Michael Hollingsworth has identified a ubiquitin interacting motif common to E2-ubiquitin conjugating enzymes within the C-terminal fragment of MUC1.? They have demonstrated that MUC1 is conjugated to ubiquitin via a cysteine residue only in the presence of an E1 enzyme and they have identified potential targets for MUC1-regulated ubiquitylation, such as the transcription factor c-Jun.? The development of inhibitors against this newly discovered E2 active site within MUC1 could become useful therapeutics for the treatment of cancer.? Furthermore new diagnostics can be developed for ubiquitinylated forms of MUC1 and targets of ubiquitinylation of MUC1, which would be extremely useful for cancer prognosis, monitoring cancer progression, and identifying appropriate therapeutic strategies.
