Rough Housing with the Rogers: Feeding a Picky Toddler

To all?those Moms who have Toddlers that "eat what we eat" or love all the food groups....I'm jealous. We once had a little boy whom you couldn't feed fast enough. He loved anything and everything as long as he got to eat, which is where Ava at 8 months is at right now. But with Austin turning 2 next month, he isn't too fond of much these days and it's like pulling teeth to get him to try new things. I read in a parenting book that sometimes it takes up to 10 times to introduce something to a toddler before they are?willingly eat it. 10 times!? Really!? I would kinda get sick of throwing that food away for the 9th time and then thinking, well....let me make it one more time.

Funny how you feel all alone and then you start talking to other Moms and sure enough, there are many picky little eaters out there. And I have to mention that I was definitely one of them. Ask anyone who knew me as a child and they would mention Fruit Roll-ups and Candy as my two favorite food groups.

What does Austin eat? Well thankfully he gets a wide variety of food at school and if you don't eat, there is no fruit snacks for back up.

When I pick Austin up from school, it's usually around 5 and by the time we actually get home it's closer to 5:30/5:45. Since it's been a while since lunch and his PM snack, I let him snack on the way home. I'm sure that's a no-no in someone's books but it gives him something to tide over until we get home and it keeps his mouth chewing and not screaming. So I usually give him a treat cup of any of the following :
raisens
mini club crackers
goldfish
yogurt melts
sometimes fruit snacks

When we walk in the door, Austin asks for a glass of milk and applesauce. We buy those Go Go Squeeze applesauces and its something he can eat on his own while I get Ava settled in the high chair and some baby food.

Our meal time is the busiest hour on the planet. We need to eat things fast and Austin as well is looking for a quick bite so he can play before bedtime.
So what do we often resort to?
Mac and Cheese:
I love those mac and cheese cups that you can microwave. Austin especially loves the character shapes because the skinny noodles are harder for him to grab with a fork. Meat and Cheese:
crackers, deli meat and any slices of cheese
Fruit:
Austin loves fruit but things he can grab or fork are the best. Strawberries, peaches or mandarins?(get the dole plastic containers so you can get a handful and put it back in the fridge) clementines (rarely seeds!) Yogurt:
Austin isn't loving the yogurt right now but at one time we were able to give him a frozen go-gurt or dannon fruit smoothies This isn't the whole list of course but it's some of the go-to items that our busy family with a picky toddler use. It's not organic...it's not what Jason and I eat exactly.....but it's a transitional period like everything else with little ones.

The New Big Niche in Staffing: Multi-Lingual

The New Big Niche in Staffing: Multi Lingual

Demand for foreign languages in staffing can range from needing an in-house supervisor who can communicate with Spanish-speaking industrial workers to filling a translator position for an international law firm.

But bilingual staffing is not as easy as just adding a checkbox to your application. As two very different staffing firms within the niche show, it?s critical to understand the nuances of your particular market.

?Recruiters have to dig deeper than ?Yes, I speak Spanish,? ? says Marcus Elosegui, vice president of KeyStaff, which places professional and light industrial workers in West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and other south Florida cities. Some people can speak both Spanish and English, but can write only in one, for example.

Translation is an even more difficult skill, and translators at the highest levels generally translate only into the language they know best, says Ken Zwerdling, CEO of Foreign Translations and Foreign Staffing. One client, for example, needed French-speaking engineers and contract managers to work on building mining facilities in Africa. Other clients need help with business development in Latin America, for instance.

Foreign Staffing does direct and contract placement for companies all over the world, while Foreign Translations translates documents in multiple languages for companies that do international business. The latter have 3,000 translators in 30 countries who have specialized expertise in areas such as legal documents, technical writing, financial writing, and scientific documentation ? in addition to their language skills.

?We understand what it truly means to be bilingual ? not, ?Hey, my secretary speaks French,? ? Zwerdling says.

The need for bilingual staff can vary by area as well as by position. For example, Spanish skills may be a competitive advantage in West Palm Beach, Elosegui says, ?but in Miami it?s just a baseline: If you want to do business in Miami, you should speak Spanish.?

For some light industrial positions, only basic English is necessary since even the on-site supervisor may speak little English. But for a receptionist position with a company with clients in South America, a worker would need to speak both Spanish and English, and sometimes even Portuguese. ?They want fully bilingual candidates,? Elosegui says.

Providing workers with good language skills can set you apart from competitors, Elosegui says. ?The higher the level of Spanish or Portuguese, the more pay you?re going to get,? he says.

With large markets? diverse populations continuing to grow and domestic companies continuing to expand connections overseas, Zwerdling says this staffing niche is booming. So much so that ?we had to stop marketing for a while.?

And as the global economy strengthens, it will grow even more. ?I see a very big uptrend in the next five years while the economy comes back,? Zwerdling says. ?These companies are going to be scrambling to find people.?

November 2012: Innovation or ?Just Improving??

?We all continually move on the edges of eternity, and are sometimes granted vistas through the fabric of illusion.? ? ?? Ansel Adams, Autobiography.

What do you want? No, really, when you think about this life you?ve been given, what do you truly want? Most people I talk with, including my coaching clients, offer up such things as reduced stress & struggle, greater productivity, more effective communication, improved relationships, etc. Noteworthy and valid wants, yet all share something in common. They represent things whose outcomes can be defined ahead of time, whose measures of success predicted ahead of time, and whose process of change planned ahead of time. Change like this is therefore step-wise, somewhat mechanistic, the kind we often call continuous improvement; it?s always framed in contrast to what has happened up until now. Rarely does anyone say, ?I want to experience a blow-me-away breakthrough, one which rocks my world, and sends me to possibility I can?t even imagine today. How can you help me with that??? (I?d love to, thank you.)

Believing we need to make things happen (by planning, predicting, measuring, controlling), we?ve become addicted to the goal-driven, control-based, results-guided drain of energy that seems to define our society. Worse, unconscious ways of thinking associated with this belief tell us there?s no other way, so we are unaware we?re blocking ourselves from greater possibility. Moreover, when we try to innovate, we?re left frustrated, because we use the same level of thinking that stops us from innovating, which, as my first coach said, is ?like trying to wash off paint with paint.??? So we can?t say we want anything really big because we can?t see anything really big; we?ve become habituated to thinking small. As a result, we fail to notice the potential all around us.

Opportunities for innovation greet us all the time. We fail to experience them because breakthroughs occur not by making them happen, but by allowing them. And to release control for long enough to simply allow anything would strike our everyday thinking as lazy and unproductive. There?s hope, however, because we humans possess levels of consciousness far deeper than the thinking required to get through an ordinary day. With perspective and with some practice, we can tap into those levels, shifting forever we way we see, think about, and experience possibility in life.

Breakthroughs happen when conditions are conducive to their manifestation, not we want them to happen. That asks for new skills, skills such as curiosity, openness, self-reflection, patience, acceptance, and trust. Those skills fly in the face of all the ?doing? skills we?re so used to. Although we seem to have mental models for curiosity, openness and self-refection, we tend to think of patience, acceptance and trust as elusive and impossible to achieve. In fact, however, they are natural and effortless by-products of a conscious & committed personal practice of curiosity, openness and self-reflection. This practice results in often-dramatic shifts in the way you think, and can make breakthroughs everyday occurrence. Strangely perhaps, you ?cultivate? this shift through a practice of non-doing. Just like cultivating a garden, you don?t ?make? roses grow; they grow fine on their own. You ?allow? them to grow by creating conditions roses love (nutrients, soil, access to sunlight, water). Breakthrough innovation is more like growing a garden than it is like building a house. If you?re ready to become the person you never thought you could be, here?s a path.

Exercise: Toward breakthrough. Create a regular time and place every day for quiet self-inquiry. A half hour each day would be a good start. The more attention you give to this, the more growth you?ll experience in your thinking and seeing. Remember, you?re counteracting the inertia of years of thinking small. Sit quietly. Do nothing. As unconscious thoughts inevitably arise, let them pass. It may take a while, but your mind eventually finds calm. Now listen. Don?t listen for; just listen. If you find you must ?do? something, be curious ? or be grateful ? or ponder what it would mean to trust life implicitly. Although the ?cause-and-effect? link may not be obvious, you?ll soon find that your consciousness has expanded so that the perpetual potential of everyday breakthrough is no longer outside your worldview, but inside. Rock your world!????? (P.S. If you?re a coach, you may enjoy a coaching-related slant on this topic; see my blog entry on the website of the International Coach Federation?s New England chapter.)

A River Runs Through It? [Life lessons offered by nature]

In the classical view of science, a system responds smoothly to change; it?s said to be linear. Changes in one thing cause changes in other things. All the science we learned through high school actually depended on linear response. We would like to believe life is like this, too, especially since science told us it was. But it is not; life is non-linear. Life is uncertain; openings to new possibility happen in response to always-changing conditions, not in response to a plan. Nature steps into open spaces such as these with her creative process, spreading life as she goes. Nature doesn?t have to try to do this. Remaining open to opportunity (which comes from not trying), she allows the process to do the work. This is how the universe coalesced into galaxies, stars and planets; it?s how evolution continues to mold life in the midst of change and uncertainty. Shifts in available resources create openings; life responds naturally, by creating value in one of three ways:

  • by replication ? making more of the same thing, in times that are ?easy;? (reproduction)
  • by improvement ? making what already exists better, during times of stress; (evolution)
  • by invention ? creating something new, beyond earlier conception, during times of chaos. (innovation)

Life?s inherent uncertainty and unpredictability create opportunity. Creative expression then flourishes by filling the void offered. Without uncertainty, there?d be no room for new opportunity, so no place for creativity to happen. How do you ?use? life?s uncertainty? Do you step into the open space with your creative genius, or do you seek the perceived comfort and safety of the everyday? What?s your relationship to creating value in life ? through doing the same thing, through improvement, through innovation?

Warmer future oceans could cause phytoplankton to thrive near poles, shrink in tropics

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? In the future, warmer waters could significantly change ocean distribution of populations of phytoplankton, tiny organisms that could have a major effect on climate change.

Reporting in this week's online journal Science Express, researchers show that by the end of the 21st century, warmer oceans will cause populations of these marine microorganisms to thrive near the poles and shrink in equatorial waters.

"In the tropical oceans, we are predicting a 40 percent drop in potential diversity, the number of strains of phytoplankton," says Mridul Thomas, a biologist at Michigan State University (MSU) and co-author of the journal paper.

"If the oceans continue to warm as predicted," says Thomas, "there will be a sharp decline in the diversity of phytoplankton in tropical waters and a poleward shift in species' thermal niches--if they don't adapt."

Thomas co-authored the paper with scientists Colin Kremer, Elena Litchman and Christopher Klausmeier, all of MSU.

"The research is an important contribution to predicting plankton productivity and community structure in the oceans of the future," says David Garrison, program director in the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences, which funded the research along with NSF's Division of Environmental Biology.

"The work addresses how phytoplankton species are affected by a changing environment," says Garrison, "and the really difficult question of whether adaptation to these changes is possible."

The MSU scientists say that since phytoplankton play a key role in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, and therefore global climate, the shift could in turn cause further climate change.

Phytoplankton and Earth's climate are inextricably intertwined.

"These results will allow scientists to make predictions about how global warming will shift phytoplankton species distribution and diversity in the oceans," says Alan Tessier, program director in NSF's Division of Environmental Biology.

"They illustrate the value of combining ecology and evolution in predicting species' responses."

The microorganisms use light, carbon dioxide and nutrients to grow. Although phytoplankton are small, they flourish in every ocean, consuming about half of the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere.

When they die, some sink to the ocean bottom, depositing their carbon in the sediment, where it can be trapped for long periods of time.

Water temperatures strongly influence their growth rates.

Phytoplankton in warmer equatorial waters grow much faster than their cold-water cousins.

With worldwide temperatures predicted to increase over the next century, it's important to gauge the reactions of phytoplankton species, say the scientists.

They were able to show that phytoplankton have adapted to local temperatures.

Based on projections of ocean temperatures in the future, however, many phytoplankton may not adapt quickly enough.

Since they can't regulate their temperatures or migrate, if they don't adapt, they could be hard hit, Kremer says.

"We've shown that a critical group of the world's organisms has evolved to do well under the temperatures to which they're accustomed," he says.

But warming oceans may significantly limit their growth and diversity, with far-reaching implications for the global carbon cycle.

"Future models that incorporate genetic variability within species will allow us to determine whether particular species can adapt," says Klausmeier, "or whether they will face extinction."

PFT: Eli admits catering to needy WRs hurt his progress

New York Giants Cruz celebrates with quarterback Manning after scoring game winning touchdown against the Washington Redskins in the fourth quarter during their NFL football game in East RutherfordReuters

When he was a younger quarterback, Eli Manning tried too hard to keep people happy. Now, he?s learned that doing his job the right way, and spending less time worrying about others will lead to greater success.

Manning admitted he fell into bad habits as a younger quarterback, trying to satisfy needy veteran targets such as Plaxico Burress, Jeremy Shockey and Tiki Barber, who once questioned his leadership.

?I think early on we probably had receivers who in practice, you?d try to force them to get them balls so they don?t get down or you keep them happy, and I think you create bad habits doing that,? Manning said, via Jorge Castillo of the Newark Star-Ledger. ?As I got older and we got younger, new guys in, it evolved to doing it the correct way, going through the reads, saying you?ve got to earn the right to get open.

?It?s all based on the coverage and on the reads and I?ve got to do that to make sure I?m doing the right things and not getting into bad habits.?

That?s enabled Manning to lead the league in passing yards this season, not despite a series of injuries to his wide receivers, but perhaps because of it.

Other than Victor Cruz, there hasn?t been a steady presence in the lineup, so Manning has had to develop relationships with whoever?s out there.

?As a quarterback you always want to trust your guys and I tell them that I don?t have favorites, I?m not going to force it to one guy,? Manning said. ?I?ve got a read and a progression. If you want to know what my progression is, I?ll be happy to tell you. And I?m going to stick to that. If you?re my first read, it?s your job to get open. If you?re not, then I?m going on to the next guy.

?I?m going to stick to those progressions and have faith that if you?re the first read that you?re going to get open for us.?

And having that kind of confidence, and lack of distractions, has made him a better quarterback and leader.

Why K-Pop is sweeping the world

The dance hit 'Gangnam Style' has introduced many Americans to the world of South Korean pop music.

By Chris Gaylord,?Staff writer / October 25, 2012

Korean rapper PSY swept the United States this summer with his catchy dance hit "Gangnam Style." The music video ? with its goofy horse dance ? racked up 467 million views on YouTube and propelled the song onto American radio.

Since the 1990s, South Korea has become one of the world's premier cultural exporters. The country's pop music, K-Pop, has a massive fan following across Asia. But before PSY, it had found little success in the US.

The Korean music industry revolves around large entertainment companies that scout out young talent, bundle them into boy bands and girl groups, teach them how to dance, and then present these highly polished acts to the world.

"They've really perfected this formula," says Colette Bennett, a writer for CNN's Geek Out blog. "The women are gorgeous. The men are gorgeous. The music is catchy and the dancing is superb."

K-Pop borrowed much of this model from the Japanese music industry, but with one big exception. Most of Japanese culture directly targets Japan. Its large population can support just about any cultural industry.

South Korea, on the other hand, is tiny. In order to reach a sizable audience, Korea's music industry needs to look abroad. So K-Pop specializes in tunes that play well in any language. For example, the boy band TVXQ releases versions of its biggest singles in Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, and English. The group even changes its name depending on where it's performing.

K-Pop's international strategy has paid off. A "hallyu" ? or Korean wave ? has spread across Asia, similar to how the British Invasion brought The Beatles and The Rolling Stones stateside in the 1960s.

But while PSY has opened the door for K-Pop in the US, it arrived with a certain irony. "Gangnam Style," with its quick beat, may be catchy, but Ms. Bennett says that the song caught on because of its zany music video. PSY struts through garbage in a suit, wages a dance-off against an androgynous hoofer, and at one point calls out a miniature look-alike. These comic antics do not reflect K-Pop ? they satirize it.

"He has all the components of K-Pop ? the dancing, the singing, the clothes ? but he also has humor," says Bennett. "And that's a killer combination for Americans."

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 to see Jelly Bean from October 25?

Android Central

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 owners might want to take a look at this one. Android Central Forums member Skunkape60 shared this image with us all a little earlier today that, if genuine, indicates the Android 4.1 update to the Galaxy S3 will start pushing out from October 25. That's tomorrow then. We've got a build number, a reminder to the stores to update their own devices, pretty much everything.

It also looks like the Sprint update will bring some LTE related improvements too. It does say that it will be rolling out over the course of a few weeks, so be patient. But, from tomorrow, start checking for those updates.

Let it snow! Solar panels can take it

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Snow and solar cells aren't mutually exclusive, according to a Michigan Technological University scientist. Photovoltaic panels can be well worth the investment even if you live in a winter wonderland.

True, a layer of snow can cause a solar-cell blackout for awhile. But not many locales enjoy heavy snow for more than a few months. And even in the bleak midwinter, panels don't usually stay snow-covered for long.

"Sometimes snow actually helps solar cells," says Michigan Tech's Joshua Pearce. He's referring to the albedo effect, when sunlight reflects off snow. It can make a panel generate more electricity in the same way that it gives skiers sunburn on sunny winter days.

With researchers from St. Lawrence College and Queen's University, in Kingston, Ontario, and a team of 20 industry partners, Pearce studied the effect of snow on the Open Solar Outdoors Test Field. They created a computer model to predict how much power generation would decline in various amounts of snow cover and on different types of solar modules mounted at different angles, from flat to steeply pitched. Then they validated their model with data from many of Ontario's huge commercial solar farms.

"In most cases power losses are minimal, even in snowy Canada," Pearce said. However, the group has developed a model that can be used to design the most efficient photovoltaic systems, no matter how much snow is in the area.

Pearce and R. W. Andrews have authored paper based on a preliminary study, "Prediction of Energy Effects on Photovoltaic Systems Due to Snowfall Events," published in proceedings of the 2012 38th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference. pp. 003386-003391.

Reclaiming rare earths: Improving process to recycle rare-earth materials

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Recycling keeps paper, plastics, and even jeans out of landfills. Could recycling rare-earth magnets do the same? Perhaps, if the recycling process can be improved.

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Ames Laboratory are working to more effectively remove the neodymium, a rare earth element, from the mix of other materials in a magnet. Initial results show recycled materials maintain the properties that make rare-earth magnets useful.

The current rare earth recycling research builds on Ames Laboratory's decades of rare-earth processing experience. In the 1990s, Ames Lab scientists developed a process that uses molten magnesium to remove rare earths from neodymium-iron-boron magnet scrap. Back then, the goal was to produce a mixture of magnesium and neodymium because the neodymium added important strength to the alloy, rather than separate out high-purity rare earths because, at the time, rare earth prices were low.

But rare earth prices increased ten-fold between 2009 and 2011 and supplies are in question. Therefore, the goal of today's rare-earth recycling research takes the process one step farther.

"Now the goal is to make new magnet alloys from recycled rare earths. And we want those new alloys to be similar to alloys made from unprocessed rare-earth materials," said Ryan Ott, the Ames Laboratory scientist leading the research. "It appears that the processing technique works well. It effectively removes rare earths from commercial magnets."

Ott's research team also includes Ames Laboratory scientist Larry Jones and is funded through a work for others agreement with the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. The research group is developing and testing the technique in Ames Lab's Materials Preparation Center, with a suite of materials science tools supported by the DOE Office of Science.

"We start with sintered, uncoated magnets that contain three rare earths: neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium," said Ott. "Then we break up the magnets in an automated mortar and pestle until the pieces are 2-4 millimeters long.

Next, the tiny magnet pieces go into a mesh screen box, which is placed in a stainless-steel crucible. Technicians then add chunks of solid magnesium.

A radio frequency furnace heats the material. The magnesium begins to melt, while the magnet chunks remain solid.

"What happens then is that all three rare earths leave the magnetic material by diffusion and enter the molten magnesium," said Ott. "The iron and boron that made up the original magnet are left behind."

The molten magnesium and rare-earth mixture is cast into an ingot and cooled. Then they boil off the magnesium, leaving just the rare earth materials behind.

"We've found that the properties of the recycled rare earths compare very favorably to ones from unprocessed materials," said Ott. "We're continuing to identify the ideal processing conditions."

The next step is optimizing the extraction process. Then the team plans to demonstrate it on a larger scale.

"We want to help bridge the gap between the fundamental science and using this science in manufacturing," said Ott. "And Ames Lab can process big enough amounts of material to show that our rare-earth recycling process works on a large scale."

Can Controversial Ocean Iron Fertilization Save Salmon?

What's been described as a "rogue" geoengineering experiment is really an effort, however flawed, to restore salmon abundance

dumping-ironADDING IRON: By adding iron to the Pacific Ocean, as pictured here, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. hoped to restore lost salmon abundance--and generate carbon credits too. Image: Courtesy of HSRC

In a bid to restore lost fish abundance, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. (HSRC) undertook to mimic the effects of a volcanic eruption by fertilizing the ocean with iron. The idea was to provide the missing nutrient for a plankton bloom that would then trickle up the food web and restore salmon?with the ancillary effects of gathering data on the ocean food web and, potentially, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

"What if this is a means by which ocean pastures can be stewarded and brought back to health?" asks Russ George, chief scientist of the expedition as well as a controversial businessman with a history of attempting to start CO2-removal schemes ranging from reforestation to ocean fertilization. "This is a tiny village of people trying to take care of their backyard."

Old Masset village on the Haida Gwaii Islands off the British Columbia coast did this by contracting George and others to initiate the largest such intentional ocean fertilization effort to date. It authorized the release of roughly 110 metric tons of iron dust, 91 metric tons of the iron sulfate fertilizer commonly used as a lawn treatment and employed in other scientific experiments, and nearly 20 metric tons of the iron oxide found in soils around the world. "It's micronutrient enrichment," Jason McNamee, operations officer and corporate director for the HSRC, told a press conference on October 19. "We took a bag of iron, and we slapped it over one square kilometer [of ocean]."

To do that, this past July the HSRC team motored more than 300 kilometers west from the Haida Gwaii Islands to an ocean eddy in the fishing vessel Ocean Pearl. The area had previously been scouted by collecting water samples since January and lies outside Canadian territorial waters. The team also used more than 20 autonomous oceangoing robots, including two bright yellow gliders and 20 Argo drifter robots on loan from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to survey the scene?work that is ongoing. Over the course of several days the researchers then released the 110 metric tons into the fishing boat's wake in an attempt to raise the levels of iron in the water from one or two parts per trillion up to five to 10, although both concentrations are estimates.

Satellite images as well as maps of chlorophyll abundance appear to show that the iron did indeed fuel a plankton bloom in August. But questions remain: Was it the right kind of bloom to bury carbon? Will it have any effect on the salmon?

Ocean restoration
The HSRC's basic idea is born out of marine biology as well as observations of the aftermath of volcanic eruptions in the region. For example, a lack of iron limits the growth of microscopic plants in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica and elsewhere, a fact that prompted marine biologist John Martin to famously muse: "Give me half a tanker of iron, and I'll give you the next ice age."

In the summer of 2008 Mount Kasatochi in Alaska's Aleutian Islands blew, sending volcanic minerals, including iron dust, far to sea and prompting plankton blooms across the Gulf of Alaska. At the same time, years and years of decline in returning salmon populations led researchers to expect few of the fry from 2008 to return in later years, only to find a record salmon run in Canada's Fraser River in 2010.

Female Komodo Dragons Die Young, Housework to Blame

komodo dragonAn eight-year study of Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) has revealed some interesting differences between the genders in the world?s largest lizard species. Male Komodo dragons grow much bigger than and live nearly twice as long as females, who apparently spend so much time reproducing and doing the equivalent of housework that it sends them to an early grave.

No, the female dragons aren?t donning aprons and doing laundry, but they do spend six months or more at a time defending eggs in their nests from potential predators. During that time, the females don?t eat and lose much of their body weight. Males, meanwhile, spend their days hunting, fighting and, one presumes, drinking beer and bowling.

The females? defensive behavior alone doesn?t account for the size and weight differences, according to research published September 19 in the journal PLoS One. The researchers?a team from Indonesia, Australia and Italy?tracked 400 komodo dragons on four Indonesian islands from 2002 to 2010 and found that males and females grew at about the same rate until they reached sexual maturity in about their seventh year. After that males kept growing, reaching an average length of 160 centimeters (excluding tails). But the females? growth plateaued at an average of 120 centimeters. The researchers concluded that males kept expending energy for growth, allowing them to compete against one another for mates, whereas the females stopped growing, redirecting all of their energy into building and maintaining nests, reproducing and guarding eggs.

The differences didn?t end at size. The researchers found that male Komodo dragons lived an average of 60 years; female life expectancy topped out at 32. In the eight years of tracking and testing the animals, the researchers were never able to find a female 33 years or older. Although Komodo dragons are cannibalistic (one reason why females have to defend their nests), the researchers found that after the lizards grew large enough to defend themselves the primary cause of death was natural aging.

The researchers say the growth and death rates could be related. Because females die so young, the males might need to keep growing so they can fight one another for the few remaining females or for territory.

This research might also serve to explain why there is such a huge gender gap in Komodo dragon populations. Out of the 2,500 or so wild dragons in Indonesia, only around 350 are breeding females. As the authors wrote in the paper, this new understanding of female mortality and gender-based growth rates could help inform future conservation efforts by allowing scientists to model future population demographics.

School "hand hygiene" plan shows no asthma benefit

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - An arsenal of hand sanitizers, hygiene education and good old-fashioned soap failed to prevent asthma attacks among school children in one Alabama county.

For children with asthma, the common cold is the top trigger of symptom attacks. So in theory, cleaner hands at school could mean fewer colds being passed around - and fewer asthma attacks.

But in a new clinical trial, researchers found that kids at schools with a "hand hygiene" plan, including alcohol-based hand sanitizers, suffered asthma attacks just often as their peers at other schools.

The findings are not, however, the final word, according to Lynn B. Gerald, a professor of health promotion sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson who led the study.

That's because the trial hit an obstacle when the H1N1 "swine" flu epidemic broke out right at the study's outset: All of the schools in the trial became a lot more vigilant about clean hands, Gerald said.

Schools that weren't part of the hand-hygiene program started putting hand sanitizer on the list of school supplies given to parents.

"Hand sanitizer became ubiquitous in schools," Gerald said.

So, she told Reuters Health, it's hard to draw conclusions about whether hand sanitizers, added to old-fashioned hand washing, might prevent some asthma attacks.

The sanitizers and soap used in the trial were provided to schools for free by Akron, Ohio-based GOJO, which makes the Purell brand hand sanitizers.

GOJO "believes there is great benefit in establishing the effectiveness of hand hygiene interventions under real-world conditions and supports scientific studies that take that approach," the company told Reuters Health.

"We agree with the conclusion that the results of this study were highly confounded by increased overall hand hygiene practices, even in the usual-care schools, as a result of the H1N1 pandemic," they said in an emailed statement.

The findings appear in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

VALUE OF INVESTMENT UNCLEAR

Frequent hand washing is one of the keys to protecting yourself from colds and the flu, or from passing the viruses to other people. But soap and water are not always at the ready, and even in school bathrooms soap dispensers may be broken or empty - especially at low-income schools like the ones in this trial, Gerald noted.

Many schools already have hand sanitizer available. At some schools, that's all they use, Gerald said. But no one knows how effective the products are versus soap and water alone.

For the current study, Gerald's team randomly assigned 31 Alabama elementary schools to either follow a special hand hygiene plan or stick with their standard ways for one school year. The schools then switched groups for the following school year.

When schools were on the hand hygiene plan, they were given hand soap for the bathrooms, and alcohol-based hand sanitizer for the bathrooms and classrooms. Students were also taught about good hand hygiene.

Gerald's team then focused on 527 students who had asthma. They found that over the two years, kids had no fewer asthma attacks when their school provided soap, sanitizers and education.

Still, the swine flu outbreak muddied the waters, according to Gerald. Asthma attacks spiked across the schools in the fall of 2009, when the swine flu was at its peak. In October, 41 percent of asthmatic kids in both groups of schools had a symptom attack, versus about 25 percent in October 2010.

And since hand sanitizers became so widely used after the swine flu arrived, the study essentially lost its "control" group.

But while these findings don't mean hand sanitizers are useless against asthma, there's also little evidence that their use in schools benefits kids.

Some other in-school clinical trials have failed to show that hand sanitizers cut down on kids' colds and flu, Gerald and her colleagues point out.

"Hand washing is probably best, and it's cheapest," Gerald said.

"It's unclear right now," she added, "whether hand sanitizers are a worthwhile investment for schools."

Gerald thinks studies should continue to look at the question, though. One reason is the fact that some schools are already using hand sanitizers, sometimes as a replacement for soap and water.

"I think we need to know how they can be used most effectively," Gerald said.

Many parents may be sending their kids off to school with a little bottle of hand sanitizer. That may or may not be helpful.

Gerald suggested teaching your kids about good hygiene in general, whether they have asthma or not. That includes hand washing, "covering up" when you cough, and keeping your fingers away from your mouth and eyes, she said.

GOJO said it "hopes the researchers will continue to study the effect of hand hygiene to reduce asthma rates with future scientific studies conducted in real world settings."

None of the researchers reports any connection to the company, but one of Gerald's colleagues on the work has ties to drug companies that make asthma medication.

Disaster Recovery Requires Business Continuity

This post is sponsored by VMware. Learn about VMware virtualization and cloud solutions for small & mid-size business visit info.vmware.com

This article is available in other languages:

You?ve planned for every possibility. Your systems are entirely redundant and automated. They?re ready to failover when something happens. And then it does happen. A 7.1 earthquake levels the city you live in. The business? systems come up in Amazon EC2 automatically thanks to some wizardry with the DR product you chose. Your Disaster Recovery plan worked.

Except. There?s a problem. Nobody?s going to work on the system. They?re all trying to find their family. The office is gone and there isn?t anywhere to work. You couldn?t even get electricity or an internet connection if you tried and the 3G network is completely clogged. You can?t even contact your staff.

The reality here is that many IT organizations seem to think that a Disaster Recovery plan is something that is the same as a Business Continuity plan, and that it should be left up to the IT guys to build, and that the ?big one? is something of folklore, but it?s more fundamental than that. The business itself actually needs to make changes and plans for such an event. A DR plan encompasses the processes around bringing up your systems, but it doesn?t cover the human factor in the equation. That?s where a Business Continuity plan comes in, and is oft-ignored.

A lot of enterprises we encounter have an infrastructure team that?s been given the task of building a disaster resilient system, and have done so using tools that are advertised for just such an instance, and it works as advertised on the box. The cloud (such as EC2 or Azure) makes the IT side of DR even easier, but it doesn?t address the entire problem. They?ve got the IT plan, but not much more. It?s likely that the management of their organization hasn?t actually thought of a situation extreme enough where nobody is going to come in to work in a disaster because there are more important things in their life such as family.

Let me get this clear now: Business Continuity is not an IT problem. It?s a company-wide problem. You have likely been given the task of building out a DR system, but now, you should consider it your responsibility to make management aware of the other things they need to handle, otherwise the system will be to blame when it ?fails? because nobody was there to work on it.

They need to plan for who?s going to run your systems while your city is out of action. Who is going to run payroll? Who?s going to respond to inquiries from your website? Where are your staff even going to work? Have you even considered where you will get the PC?s to keep working?

If you have a mirrored data-center at a separate location, that?s great, but you may want to consider getting an office there too, and additional staff at that location that can work when your primary staff aren?t able to.

The cost might look extraordinarily high, but if the business needs to keep running, and making money (like most businesses) it shouldn?t matter. Most organizations are ignorant when it comes to Business Continuity, assuming that a ?major event? is unlikely to happen to them, so they don?t plan for it, or only plan to the bare minimum, ignoring the human factor in the equation.
IT is so critical to business now, so it?s foolish to assume that the business could recover without proper planning.

I?m not suggesting that you, as the IT guy for your company is now responsible for the development of a Business Continuity plan for the Finance or HR team, but you?re now responsible for making others aware of what they need to do. Take it upon yourself, or it?s likely no one else will.

Gov't consumer watchdog to oversee debt collectors

(AP) ? Expanding its reach, the government's consumer finance watchdog agency will monitor the day-to-day operations of big debt-collection companies, the agency said Wednesday.

It is the first time that debt collectors have been subject to federal scrutiny of their routine business practices.

The move lengthens the list of industries that face oversight by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The agency was set up after the financial crisis to protect consumers from misleading marketing, unfair fees and other harmful practices.

Debt collectors have long been criticized for hard-knuckled tactics like calling the employers of people who fail to repay debts or filing lawsuits against people who owe relatively little money. Some of the practices may violate federal disclosure rules and protections against harassment and intimidation.

About 30 million Americans have, on average, $1,500 of debt that is subject to the debt-collection industry, the agency said. That information often is reported to credit bureaus, so debt collectors can affect a person's ability to finance a car or the rate she pays on a mortgage.

The bureau already supervises mortgage companies, private student lenders and payday lenders. Those industries were placed under its watch in the 2010 overhaul of financial laws, which established the agency.

Debt collectors are the second group, after credit bureaus, that the agency is choosing to include in its supervision program. The CFPB started overseeing credit bureaus last month.

Under the program of ongoing supervision, regulators can demand information from any larger company, even when there is no indication that the company did something wrong. Supervisors and examiners can review marketing materials, phone scripts, consumer disclosures and other aspects of a business.

Before the CFPB was created, banks faced similar routine oversight by other regulators that focused mainly on their financial strength. In granting the consumer bureau the authority to supervise non-bank companies, Congress vastly strengthened the federal government's tools for identifying and preventing practices deemed harmful to consumers.

The agency can file civil charges or take enforcement action against any company that violates consumer laws, even if the company is not part of its supervision program.

Supervision of debt collectors will begin Jan. 2. Only companies with more than $10 million in annual receipts will be subject to the heightened scrutiny. That includes about 175 debt collectors that account for more than 60 percent of the industry's annual receipts, the agency said.

Taliban kill 10 Afghan troops

KABUL Taliban insurgents killed 10 Afghan troops in an ambush in western Herat province, police and government officials said Tuesday.

A spokesman for the provincial governor, Muhiudin Noori, said the Afghan troops ? which included both soldiers and police ? were searching late Monday for a group of insurgents who had earlier set up a roadblock, stopping and seizing passing vehicles, when they were ambushed.

Five policemen, including the district commander and five soldiers died in the ensuing firefight, Noori said. There were no insurgent casualties, but police later arrested 25 suspects found in the area, he said.

Also Tuesday, an American service member was killed in an insurgent attack in the east, the US military said. It did not provide further details about the attack. The latest death makes at least 12 American service members killed so far this month and 265 killed so far this year.

Article continues below

The Herat ambush was the bloodiest single incident for Afghan security forces this year in western Afghanistan ? an area where the insurgents have been less active than in their strongholds in the east and west of the country.

In recent months, Taliban guerrillas have been switching tactics and increasingly targeting Afghan security forces as the international coalition continues its drawdown toward a planned withdrawal of the majority of combat troops in 2014.

Meanwhile, President Hamid Karzai condemned ?in the strongest possible terms? a Nato raid on Sunday in Logar province in which he said four children were killed. A presidential statement said coalition troops carried out the operation in Baraki Barak district in an effort to apprehend two armed militants. But this resulted in the deaths of the four children who were tending to their animals in the same area, it said.

Din Mohammad Darwesh, spokesman for the provincial governor, said the victims were between 10 and 13 years old.

Nato on Tuesday acknowledged that its forces ?may be responsible for the unintended, but nonetheless tragic, death of three Afghan civilians? during the operation in Baraki Barak district. Coalition commander US Gen. John R. Allen expressed his condolences to the families of those killed.

There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy in the number of victims in the two statements.

In recent months, Karzai has criticised the international military coalition for what he said was the killing of civilians in Afghanistan, for not going after terrorist safe havens in neighboring Pakistan and for not providing the Afghan forces with all the weapons they need.

The criticisms drew an angry response from U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who earlier this month said the Afghan leader should occasionally say ?thank you? to allied forces who are fighting and dying in Afghanistan, rather than criticising them.
