Pakistani passenger jet with 127 on board crashes

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A Pakistani passenger jet with 127 people on board crashed into wheat fields Friday as it was trying to land in a thunder storm at an airport near the capital Islamabad. Sobbing relatives of those on the flight flocked to the airport, and officials said there appeared to be no survivors.

Emergency workers used flashlights to search among the smoldering wreckage of the fuselage, smashed seats and body parts for any sign of life at the crash site, which was just a few kilometers (miles) from the Benazir Bhutto International Airport. One rescue official asked villagers to bring him sheets to cover the dead.

The aircraft was a Boeing 737-200 operated by Bhoja Air, a domestic carrier that has just four planes and only resumed operations last month after suspending them in 2001 due to financial difficulties. The flight was traveling from the country's largest city of Karachi to the Pakistani capital, officials said. It was the airline's first evening flight from Karachi, according to a Bhoja Air official.

Relatives of those on the flight thronged the airline's counters at Karachi and Islamabad airports, crying.

"My brother's wife was on board this flight," said Naveed Khan, who was among family members who gathered at Karachi's airport. "We pray for the departed souls, what else can we do now?"

Wreckage, including smashed seats, clothes and jewelry belonging to passengers, was spread out over a one-kilometer (half-mile) wide area.

"I saw nothing but body parts and twisted metal on the ground when reached the scene," said local resident Mustafa, who only gave one name. "We collected up small pieces of human flesh and bundled them in cloth sheets like we collect grain."

Islamabad police chief Bani Yameen said that nobody on the ground appeared to be killed, "but apparently all onboard perished." Civil aviation officials also reported survivors were unlikely, said Defense Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar.

A violent rain, wind and thunder storm was lashing the capital at the time of the crash, which occurred about 6:40 p.m. local time.

"It was really bad weather for a flight," said Navy captain Arshad Mahmood, who lives near the crash site. "The pilot was forced to move down to avoid clouds that were generating the lightening and thunder."

Several farmers threshing wheat in the field near the crash said they saw the craft burst into flames when it hit the ground.

"The flames leapt up like they were touching the sky," said Mohammad Zubair.

The army declared an emergency and cordoned off the crash site

TV footage showed wreckage of the plane, including parts of what looked like its engine and wing, up against the wall of a small building. Rescue officials were working in the dark, with many using flashlights as they combed the area.

The last major plane crash in the country ? and Pakistan's worst ever ? occurred in July 2010 when an Airbus A321 aircraft operated by Airblue crashed in the hills overlooking Islamabad, killing all 152 people on board.

A government investigation blamed the pilot for veering off course amid stormy weather. The impact of the crash was devastating, scorching a wide swath of the hillside and scattering wreckage over a kilometer (half-mile) stretch. Most bodies were so badly damaged that identification required DNA testing.

Bhoja Air started domestic operations in Pakistan in 1993 and eventually expanded to international flights to the United Arab Emirates in 1998. The company suspended operations in 2001 due to financial difficulties but resumed them in 2012.

In a statement, the Boeing Co. extended its condolences to the families of the victims and offered technical assistance to Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority.

Wall St climbs after 2-day loss; euro rallies

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares on Wall Street rose on Friday after two days of losses as focus returned to better-than-expected first-quarter earnings in the United States and the euro and commodities gained on reduced worries over Spain's debt burden.

U.S. Treasuries prices slid as traders pulled back from the recent rush into safe-havens. Some were also squaring positions as a cautionary step ahead of the French elections and next week's gatherings of key policymakers, including the U.S. Federal Reserve.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 was up half a percent at midday and headed for a 1.2 percent gain on the week, its first weekly gain in three weeks. That followed strong first-quarter results from fast-food chain McDonald's, software giant Microsoft and top U.S. conglomerate General Electric Co.

Of the 121 S&P 500 components reporting through Friday morning, 81 percent beat expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data.

"It continues to be another good earnings season," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at OakBrook Investments LLC in Lisle, Illinois.

"They are good signs the U.S. economy remains on track, it's not super growth, but it's growth."

At noon, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 105.09 points, or 0.81 percent, at 13,069.19. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 8.62 points, or 0.63 percent, at 1,385.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 18.65 points, or 0.62 percent, at 3,026.21.

Some, however, cautioned that there had been no clear break in the push-and-pull exerted on the market over the past week by macroeconomic forces.

"We are seeing this constant struggle, and we are at the same point as the last two years come the spring, where you see earnings continue to be positive," said Michael Gault, senior portfolio strategist at WeiserMazars Wealth Advisory in New York.

"Some of the macroeconomic pressures (are) really fighting back what corporate earnings are doing and indicating in terms of the status of the recovery."

While Spain was not the foremost thing on investors' minds as in the last two days, underlying concerns about Madrid's budget deficit, banking sector and poor growth outlook were real and constant, analysts said.

Many worry that if Spain's bond yields rise to 7 percent and beyond, it could make the country's borrowing costs unaffordable. Ten-year government bond yields in Spain topped 6 percent for a third time this week after a debt auction on Thursday fell short of market expectations.

The creeping Spanish yields should keep the euro constrained within the $1.30-$1.32 range, currency traders said.

The euro was last at $1.3213 in New York trading, having hit a session high of $1.3224. A firm break below $1.30 would eventually open the door to a test of the single currency's 2012 low at $1.2624, traders said.

A small respite from the worries over Spain and the euro zone came from the Ifo survey of German business sentiment, which unexpectedly rose for the sixth month running.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was down 4/32, its yield at 1.9823 percent.

Demand for U.S. government bonds softened ahead of the first round of French elections on Sunday; the semiannual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington; and the Fed's policy meeting next week.

European stocks gained 0.4 percent, while world equities climbed 0.5 percent.

On the commodities side, benchmark Brent crude oil in London was up nearly 1 percent at above $118 a barrel, paring gains from an earlier high above $119.

LASEK Eye Surgery ? How LASEK Works, and What To Expect ? AllAboutVision com.LASEK, or E-LASIK, is better for some patients than regular LASIK.Learn when LASEK is the right laser eye surgery choice.Tweet Lasek Eye Surgery laser epithelial keratomileusis is a newer variation of.PRK , a procedure in which laser energy is applied directly to the eye?s outer surface for reshaping and vision correction. To understand how Lasek Eye Surgery works, you first must know the fundamental differences between. With LASIK , a thin flap is cut into the eye?s surface and then lifted.Laser energy is applied to the eye for reshaping, and the flap is replaced to serve as a type of natural bandage for quicker healing. An eye surgeon using PRK does not cut a thin flap into the eye?s surface, as occurs with LASIK.Instead, laser energy is applied directly to the eye?s surface. The ultra thin, outer layer of the eye epithelium is removed completely by laser energy during a PRK procedure, and eventually grows back.A Lasek Eye Surgery procedure involves preserving the extremely thin epithelial layer by lifting it from the eye?s surface before laser energy is applied for reshaping.

After the Lasek Eye Surgery procedure, the epithelium is replaced on the eye?s surface. With Lasek Eye Surgery, the ultra thin flap is created with a special cutting tool known as a trephine.Lasek Eye Surgery is used mostly for people with corneas that are too thin or too steep for LASIK, when it may be difficult to create a thicker LASIK flap.Lasek Eye Surgery was developed to reduce the chance of complications that occur when the flap created during LASIK does not have the ideal thickness or diameter.Epi-LASIK uses a plastic blade, called an epithelial separator, to detach part of the epithelial layer from the eye. However, eyes undergoing Lasek Eye Surgery procedures generally heal more slowly and result in more complaints of discomfort than with LASIK.For this reason, some surgeons prefer to perform PRK rather than Lasek Eye Surgery or epi-Lasek Eye Surgery because they find no advantage in the latter procedures.Journal of Refractive Surgery indicated that people undergoing PRK tended to have less pain and healed slightly faster than people who had undergone a surgical technique called butterfly Lasek Eye Surgery ?Butterfly? refers to the shape and type of thin flap lifted in Lasek Eye Surgery, which is thought to increase comfort and healing time. The Lasek Eye Surgery Procedure During Lasek Eye Surgery, your surgeon uses local anesthesia. After sponging the alcohol solution from the eye, the surgeon uses a tiny hoe to lift the edge of the epithelial flap and gently fold it back out of the way.Afterward, a type of spatula is used to place the epithelial flap back on the eye.

In a new variation of Lasek Eye Surgery, the same plastic blade epithelial separator used in epi-LASIK creates the thin epithelial flap. But because alcohol is applied during the procedure as it is in straight Lasek Eye Surgery, the procedure is called epi-Lasek Eye Surgery with an ?E? instead of an ?I ?.After Lasek Eye Surgery In many ways, Lasek Eye Surgery vision recovery is slower than LASIK recovery, but there are some differences.According to doctors who perform Lasek Eye Surgery, the flap edge heals in about a day, though patients usually wear a bandage contact lens for approximately four days to protect the eye.Your eye may feel irritated during the first day or two afterward. You also may experience more pain with Lasek Eye Surgery compared with LASIK.Talking to Your Doctor If you are considering LASIK, but your doctor says you need Lasek Eye Surgery, ask why.LASIK Eye Surgery Risks, Advantages, Disadvantages, Facts, History and Complications on MedicineNet com.Get information about LASIK, refractive surgery for vision correction of astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness , risk factors dry eyes, high myopia or hyperopia and benefits.
