Teens make 'impact' on Danville homes | GoDanRiver.com

For the second year in a row Danville teens are giving up a week of their summer to help repair and clean up homes.

For several years the youth of Trinity United Methodist Church traveled to Richmond with a program called ?Impact Richmond? to repair homes there, but last summer they decided to organize projects in the Danville area, according to Sandra Payne, a volunteer with Impact Danville.

Teens from several area churches joined the Trinity kids for the week-long program this week, along with adult volunteers with the needed skills and experience. Other volunteers provide transportation, snacks and homes for the 35 kids to shower.

Joclyn Rhone?s children have participated in the past and three are involved this year.

?I will never be able to describe how awesome it is to see kids ? especially your own ? do something like this,? Rhone said. ?Here they are, in July, sweating and working so hard for someone else, and there are no complaints from them. Honestly, we have to tell the kids to stop working.?

The teens pay a fee to participate and then stay away from home, cell phones, video games and TVs for the week, camping out at Trinity at night.

It?s not all work and no pay, though, Rhone said. There was a block party at Trinity?s parking lot on Sunday night, eating with their work crews at various restaurants, bowling, swimming and a Danville Braves game.

A local band, Brothers Under the Sun, comes each night. There is also a worship service every night with a visiting pastor and a homeowner?s night on Friday night where the homeowners are invited for a meal and to worship.

?The kids get to introduce their homeowners to the rest of the group. They can?t wait to do that every year,? Rhone said. ?They are so proud to have them there and to honor them ? The homeowners truly are grateful and?often emotional about what the kids do. There?s a lot of trust that goes with this, on both sides, and by the end of the week there?s a bond between the two sides.?

?

More than last year

Impact Danville had three projects last year, but this summer has worked on nine houses in the city and county.

?This year we added a landscaping crew as well that will go from site to site doing yard work,? Rhone said. ?The kids will be doing anything from painting to gutter work to building decks to yard work. They will dry lock basements, replace doors, paint rooms, paint the outside of houses and refurbish decks and fences.

?We try to go above and beyond the expectations we set for ourselves. And the kids will constantly add to what they are doing ? They just can?t do enough that week.?

One crew worked on a home off Halifax Road this week, repairing a deck, stairs and the roof for an older couple. They also painted the windowsills and cleaned up the yard and a carport.

?It?s just great to help people out who can?t do anything to help the way they are living,? said 17-year-old Joe Seamster.

The couple invited the kids in to enjoy the air conditioning while eating their lunches and Seamster got a bonus ? he found out he was a cousin to the homeowner.

The daughter of the couple also treated the teens to brownies and lemonade.

Kim Johnson, 16, also on the crew, said that it was fun spending her summer this way.

?If I?m capable of working on these houses, I don?t know why I shouldn?t,? she said.

UN arms talks end without deal

UN negotiations to draft the first international treaty on the multi-billion-dollar arms trade have ended without a deal, with some diplomats blaming the United States for the deadlock.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon said Friday he was "disappointed" that member states failed to clinch an agreement after several years of preparatory work and four weeks of negotiations, calling it a "setback."

But he vowed "steadfast" commitment to obtaining a "robust" arms trade treaty, noting that countries had agreed to pursue negotiations.

"There is already considerable common ground and states can build on the hard work that has been done during these negotiations," he added.

Some diplomats said Washington had refused to vote on the proposed text, saying it needed more time before the midnight deadline and was worried about a pushback from the US Congress.

Russia and other countries followed suit.

"It's the fault of the United States that we failed," a Western diplomat said, requesting anonymity to speak freely about the subject.

"They derailed the process and we will have to wait for the US presidential elections" in November to get out of the impasse, the diplomat added.

But State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, in a written statement issued late Friday, that the United States supported a second round of negotiations, conducted on the basis of consensus, on the treaty next year.

Nuland noted that while the illicit trafficking in conventional arms was an important national security concern for the United States, Washington did not support a vote at the UN General Assembly on the current text.

"While we sought to conclude this month's negotiations with a Treaty, more time is a reasonable request for such a complex and critical issue," the spokeswoman said. "The current text reflects considerable positive progress, but it needs further review and refinement."

She did not offer any specifics.

Conference chairman Ambassador Roberto Garcia Moritan of Argentina acknowledged that some countries had objected to the final treaty draft. The UN General Assembly, which begins its new session in late September, will decide whether and when there will be more negotiations.

In the end, 90 countries -- including all European Union members, and states from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa -- signed the text, saying they were "disappointed but... not discouraged" and vowing to soon finalize a treaty based on Moritan's draft.

A consensus of all 193 countries involved in the talks had been required to agree on the accord.

"We always thought this was going be difficult and that this outcome was a possible one," said Moritan.

But he predicted that delegates would have a treaty in their hands "soon."

France's main negotiator, Ambassador Jean-Hugues Simon-Michel, said the failure to reach agreement was the "worst possible scenario" and that diplomats may now have to start all over again.

"The result is rather frustrating and the ball is now in the country of the General Assembly," he told AFP.

Rights groups were also quick to blame the stalemate on the United States, where any treaty on conventional arms sales is vehemently opposed by the powerful gun lobby.

"It was a lack of political will on the part of President (Barack) Obama to take this historic opportunity forward to reduce the effect of the illicit arms trade," said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association.

He called for "leadership" from Washington, Moscow, London and other major arms exporters and importers, while Oxfam America's senior policy adviser Scott Stedjan blamed the impasse on a lack of "political courage" from Obama.

The White House's failure of courage to press this treaty to conclusion today... is a loss for hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians that die each year from armed violence fueled by the unregulated transfer of arms," said Stedjan.

Tracing your Jewish Family Tree |

Shalom!

In this blog I want to share resources that I hope will help you build your Jewish family tree. Because many Jewish families? kinship links were fragmented by immigration and the Holocaust, it can be difficult to uncover Jewish ancestors. Moreover, obstacles such as name changes, towns that no longer exist, and shifting national boundaries have created barriers to tracing Jewish family history.

There is good news though! There are more resources available now than were in the past. Previously closed archives, such as some in the former Soviet Union, have recently made their holdings public. Many genealogical and historical societies whose interests are focused on Jewish history and family roots have indexed and posted historical documents online. Jewish genealogical resources have become more organized and available so more professional genealogists are knowledgeable about Jewish family history. Many family historians will now be able to take their trees back 2 or more generations than was possible five years ago. If you are a first time genealogy researcher, or stuck someplace on your family tree, these links will help you in your search for your Jewish roots.

JewishGen

JewishGen is one of the best all-around resources for tracing Jewish genealogy. It has multiple data bases and over 20 million records that can be accessed for free! In one of their data bases, Family Finder, there are over 90,000 researchers you can link with and 450,000 entries. There are also discussion forums where you can interact and with other family historians on specific topics. On this site almost everyone will find something relevant to their family genealogy. There is so much information on the JewishGen website that it can be overwhelming, but don?t worry, there is a Get Started menu where you can learn how to use the site to your best advantage.

Lithuanian-Jewish Family History Resources

There are several good resources for family historians whose family links trace back to Lithuanian. LitvakSIG has a free searchable database with over 1.1 million. You can take a membership out for $36.00/year and access considerably more information such as historical documents, archived materials, maps, an image library, and a digest and scholarly journal.

The Jewish Family History website focuses on Jewish families who lived in Poland-Lithuania during the 17th and 18th centuries. The research group translates documents and provides maps, photos, town lists, and surnames. One of the valuable features of this site you can determine what the names of towns were in the past and what the towns are now called. The same applies to surnames. Though not a lot of documents such as census, this website has valuable information that will help you identify your family roots in Lithuania.

The Lithuanian Jewish Family History Research Guide from the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute provides four pages of useful resource links. The LITHUANIA-JEWISH-L is a listserv and is another good resource for family historians tracing their 18th century Jewish roots in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania

Yad Vashem

It is sad to think that most Jewish people living today had one or more relatives that died during the Holocaust. Yad Vashem is the main center for Holocaust education, remembrance, research, and documentation. Yad Vashem?s online site contains a list and biography of two-thirds of the six million Jews who died as a result of the Holocaust, a photo archive, exhibitions, untold stories section, and many other resources of interest to family historians.

Jewish Genealogical Society

The Jewish Genealogical Society is based in New York City but has members throughout the world that access its information and resources, much of which is online. There is a members fee but they do offer much in return: field trips, annual summer seminars held across the United States and worldwide, an annual conference, a library, archives, podcasts, access to more than 500,000 records, and exclusive databases. Additionally, members have free to access to the Jewishdata.org database.

Sephardicgen

Jeffrey Malka, an expert in Sephardic genealogy, has a website where he shares vital genealogical resources for those interested in Sephardic family history. His site at sephardicgen.com contains 27 databases and links to many offsite databases. You will also find on this site Sephardic history, archives, a gazetteer, family trees, and many other useful resources.

Yasher Ko?ach ? well done in tracing your family tree, stay the path because it is a good act of remembrance, a path to learning who you are and a family treasure!

Danes set sights on claim to North Pole

Denmark will dispatch a scientific expedition to the Arctic Ocean at the end of the month to gather data before it submits a formal claim to a vast tract north of Greenland that includes the North Pole.

Such a claim would be made under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), setting up a possible clash of interests with fellow Arctic coastal states Russia and Canada that are making their own claims.

"We need the data that we plan to acquire on this cruise," said Christian Marcussen, the expedition's chief scientist from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. "But ... we are quite confident that we will be able to make a submission."

Denmark admits it is interested in staking a claim to a part of the planet believed to be rich in untapped oil and gas, but rules out a unilateral "land grab" or being drawn into confrontation over competing claims.

"I reject the confrontation scenarios that have been presented in the media and academic circles," Klaus Holm, Denmark's Arctic ambassador, said.

"If there is any area where every party has an interest in cooperating, it is the Arctic. The challenge is so huge and the areas are so vast."

The expedition will sail from Svalbard off northern Norway on July 31 aboard the Swedish icebreaker "Oden" and will gather seismic and depth data to substantiate a future possible claim, for which the deadline for Denmark is November 2014.

Danish flag at pole?
Denmark has identified five potential claim areas off the Faroe Islands and Greenland ? both parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Copenhagen has already submitted claims for areas north and south of the Faroes and for two areas south of Greenland to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) which assesses the scientific validity of such claims.

Any dispute would, however, need to be resolved through negotiations between states, and not by the CLCS.

The other area Denmark has identified ? likely to be the most sensitive part of any future claim ? is roughly 150,000 square kilometers (58,000 square miles) extending north from Greenland and including the North Pole.

For that claim to be credible, much depends on whether the expedition is able to gather data to prove that the Lomonosov Ridge, an underwater formation spanning 1,800 kilometers (1,118 miles) across the pole, is an extension of Greenland's land mass.

Russian scientists claim that the ridge is an extension of Russia's land mass, but that does not exclude that it could also be an extension of Greenland and Canada, Marcussen said.

Under the U.N. convention, a country can extend its 200-nautical-mile economic zone if it can prove that the continental shelf is a natural extension of its land mass.

Russia caused controversy in 2007 when a mini-submarine took the Russian flag to the seabed at the North Pole, sparking accusations of imperialism.

Marcussen said he didn't rule out stopping at the pole to plant a Danish flag on the ice, as his team did in 2009, if it happened to be on the icebreaker's route.

But he said that was not the goal of the 45-day expedition and that any flag would be removed after such a ceremony.
