Although many alternative medicine have great track records and have been shown to help cure many conditions, most of these treatments are not accepted as appropriate care by your disability insurance company. Another concern of disability insurance companies are individuals who are in no hurry to get better from their condition and would choose to continue to sit at home and collect benefits. For this reason, a disability insurance company requires that a claimant be treated through the most generally accepted mainstream medical treatment. This does not mean that you cannot receive an alternative treatment, it just has to be part of a regimen that includes a treatment accepted by the medical associations.
This is another loophole that insurance companies can try and use to deny disability claims. They will use their physicians to try and discredit any treatment they do not deem as acceptable, even if it is treating the condition. Often, they will try and require a patient to use risky procedures to try and put them back to work quickly, risking the health of a claimant so they can save a few dollars. This is the type of practice that a claimant must defend themselves against by proving their treatment is mainstream and is effective at curing the condition in question.
