room of the week : updated heirlooms | - the At Home in Arkansas ...

Posted on 31 July 2012

When Carita and Bennie Ryburn inherited a house full of antiques from Bennie?s grandmother, they weren?t sure how to make the heirlooms work with their young, active family. Enter Tobi Fairley, who was able to update the house and the furniture with modern color palettes and low maintenance fabrics.

During the renovation, a fire damaged parts of the house, including the dining room, as seen in the before photo above. But by replacing the chandelier and moulding with newer options that match the style of the home, adding a modern trellis wallpaper in an unexpected chartreuse and lavender paint to the ceiling, Fairley brought this room back to life. Chartreuse curtains and polka dot fabric on the chairs keep the room feeling young and contemporary despite the antique table. The painting, a family heirloom, was a particular favorite of the At Home staffers on the day of the photo shoot.
