Indoor tanning has become very popular in the past few years especially with teens and young adults wanting to maintain a year-round tan.? There are several reasons?people partake in using indoor tanning beds, but one of the most common misconceptions?we?hear in the dermatology world is?that tanning beds are safer than tanning in direct sunlight.??Wrong!
Indoor tanning is directly related to an increased risk of melanoma and other types of skin cancers. Several states such as New York, California, Vermont, and Rhode Island have joined in the fight against melanoma; which is the deadliest form of skin cancer, and non-melanoma skin cancers. Unfortunately, melanoma has been increasing in the last thirty years mostly in young women who are the most common users of indoor tanning beds. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and artificial sources, such as tanning beds and sun lamps, is a known carcinogen. Yet, nearly 30 million people tan indoors in the United States annually. Of these, 2.3 million are teens.
The?States mentioned above have started to take a stand against the rise in melanoma cases in teens and young adults by?passing laws prohibiting use of indoor tanning beds by minors under the age of 18 without parental consent. This law is to protect children and adolescents from the health hazards associated with indoor tanning and so that they may learn the harmful effects that it can create. Also, it will stop this behavior before it becomes a harmful habit that would continue into adulthood.
As a Dermatology health care provider we need to educate patients about sun protection and the dangers of indoor tanning. The American Academy of Dermatology has raised a public awareness initiative known as SPOT Skin Cancer which teaches patients how to check the criteria of abnormal moles; find free skin cancer screenings and share stories amongst those who have been diagnosed with skin cancer.
Here at Natura Dermatology our commitment is that no human dies from a melanoma.
